This review is from: Backlash (Hardcover)
Mark Hanlon is the British Occupation officer, the authority in Bad Quellenberg, an Austrian village in the Alps at the time when World War II has ended.
Far away from his roots and family, he will have to cope with inhabitants who are trying to recover from the horrors and hardships of war and do not really welcome the new occupation authority.
At first, he will have to manage to get collaboration from the local authorities to hunt down an insane murderer on the prowl that is a threat for him. That will be a difficult task and will make him get in touch with various characters, not all very trustworthy...
Most of the villagers have something to hide and Hanlon, the hero himself, is not an exception...

Morris West succeeds in writing an exciting thriller and delves deeply into the concepts of morals, justice, mercy, sanity or power and shows to the reader the many secrets that lurk beneath a people that has overcome the horrors of war.
He is a master in describing feelings in extreme situations and in bringing out dark aspects of tormented souls, as well as in describing an alpine landscape throughout this book.
