Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

If you’re a hiker or camper, you need this book. Why? Because you love your gear and depend on it to make your trips comfortable and safe. In the field stuff happens, and knowing how to cope can be the difference between a great trip and a miserable one. Plus, your gear should last many years, but only if you know how to keep it working properly.

This book covers all manner of outdoor gear—from boots and packs to tents, jackets, and kitchenware. Learn how to keep your gear finely tuned, properly stored, and operating at its best, and how to fix problems yourself—saving you serious money and time. Step-by-step instructions and real-world color photos walk you through all the repairs. And let’s face it, some things are beyond fixing, even for the most skilled DIY-ers, so this book includes lots of advice on what features to look for when shopping for new gear.

Kristin Hostetter has successfully written a book on how to fix your own gear. Heck, she even fixed my gear in this book. My trekking poles were shot after a fall in the catskills, or so I thought. I was about to trash them and spend another 200 bucks, when I saw that Kristin was looking for gear to fix for her book. I got in contact with her and before I knew it, my poles were returned almost as good as new. This isn't just a hypothetical "how to fix field problems", she actually did it. And using simple tools that everyone has.

So, I highly recommend this book for anyone who has money invested in gear and uses it. You will definitely bang your gear up sooner or later and need to do some minor repairs. Kristen gives you step-by-step, easy to follow directions. If you would rather fix your broken gear than blow more money on the same thing, you need this book!

Well written and informative - not just a rehash of old ideas like other books on the topic. The tips and techniques presented are truly useful and eliminate the need to gather information from multiple sources. Ample illustrations throughout the entire book help to convey important points and enliven the presentation. Highly recommend!

This book has a lot of good information for hikers with damaged gear. Most fixes are easy to follow and are described well. Instead of buying new gear contribute to a cleaner earth by fixing your old reliable stuff.

This author has game - heck she trained the Editor in Chief in gear. She knows the people who made it, designed it, sell it - and then she takes all this gear out and tests it and knows all the others testing it. The big so what to us is that she is the book and shared it. A zillion hours spent saving, fixing and caring for gear leaves us with this fine work. Must have if you don't want to have to buy new stuff every year. Keep it working well, stay safe and save our planet and your wallet.
Peace,
Swami Nick
