5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book; good overview of backpacking photography, March 15, 1999

This is definitely a book worth reading for learning about the tradeoffs involved when doing backpacking and photography. He discusses the equipment and the techniques that need to be considered when you can't carry 300lb of equipment.

He gets very specific when recommending gear, which is something I liked. The information is starting to get somewhat dated; this book was published in 1994. However, he talks about the reasons why he recommends certain gear, which is what you really need to know anyway.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for beginners and pros alike., February 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Backpacker's Photography Handbook: How to Take Great Wilderness Pictures While Hiking, Climbing (Paperback)
As an experienced outdoor photographer I benefitted from my third read of this book. Nevertheless, a person with little or no experience could easily follow the well organized development of the subject material. Although I found the writing to be a little rough in spots, the direct style is very effective. Few words are wasted. I especially appreciate the author's integration of the text with the captions accompanying the pictures which explain the techniques used to create their effects.

A first class job.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable for anyone hitting the photo trail, March 2, 1998
This review is from: The Backpacker's Photography Handbook: How to Take Great Wilderness Pictures While Hiking, Climbing (Paperback)
This was an inspirational read for a lapsed outdoor photographer getting back on the trail. The gear recommendations have been right on so far and I continue to find creative gems every time I pick it up. This book will get you burning a lot of Velvia so just buy it, OK?
