This is definitely a book worth reading for learning about the tradeoffs involved when doing backpacking and photography. He discusses the equipment and the techniques that need to be considered when you can't carry 300lb of equipment.

He gets very specific when recommending gear, which is something I liked. The information is starting to get somewhat dated; this book was published in 1994. However, he talks about the reasons why he recommends certain gear, which is what you really need to know anyway.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for beginners and pros alike., February 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Backpacker's Photography Handbook: How to Take Great Wilderness Pictures While Hiking, Climbing (Paperback)
As an experienced outdoor photographer I benefitted from my third read of this book. Nevertheless, a person with little or no experience could easily follow the well organized development of the subject material. Although I found the writing to be a little rough in spots, the direct style is very effective. Few words are wasted. I especially appreciate the author's integration of the text with the captions accompanying the pictures which explain the techniques used to create their effects.

A first class job.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable for anyone hitting the photo trail, March 2, 1998
This review is from: The Backpacker's Photography Handbook: How to Take Great Wilderness Pictures While Hiking, Climbing (Paperback)
This was an inspirational read for a lapsed outdoor photographer getting back on the trail. The gear recommendations have been right on so far and I continue to find creative gems every time I pick it up. This book will get you burning a lot of Velvia so just buy it, OK?

The author draws from an excellent background and beautifully presented examples. If one is interested in backpacking into the wilds and taking good pictures consistently, this book describes exactly how to do it.

Although Campbell uses the book to blantantly advertise his exposure system, it is very well written and explains the art of good photography extremely well. His technique actually works! I've tried it and I have had more consistent results.

His checklists for gear and his comments about the items are extremely valuable for those who have not ventured far or for those who would go farther.

This is a good beginner or intermediate book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very understandable and customized for the backpacker, April 14, 1999

This review is from: The Backpacker's Photography Handbook: How to Take Great Wilderness Pictures While Hiking, Climbing (Paperback)
This is my favorite photography book. Not only is it written for the backpacker, but Mr. Campbell's descriptions of basic camera functionality are the clearest and simplest I've ever read. A favorite.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical advice for taking great backpacking photos, July 2, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: The Backpacker's Photography Handbook: How to Take Great Wilderness Pictures While Hiking, Climbing (Paperback)
A well-written, well-organized, useful book by a devoted outdoor adventurer. This is the best source I've found for practical advice on what/how to pack for different trips, how to use your time in the outdoors effectively, and how to capture the best light when adventuring. His inspirational introduction still motivates me (Campbell pursued his dream of becoming a professional nature photographer following a near-death experience). This book goes beyond the standard photography tips, providing useful insights and equipment recommendations geared specifically toward the outdoor adventurer/photographer. Campbell has spent considerable time in the wilderness and shares his knowledge quite effectively. If you enjoy mountaineering, hiking, rafting, or skiing and enjoy sharing your experiences with others through photographs, this book is for you

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, July 25, 2006

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Backpacker's Photography Handbook: How to Take Great Wilderness Pictures While Hiking, Climbing (Paperback)
To be honest I wasn't expecting much, however, after reading the first few pages I was entranced by the authors non nonsense to the point style of writing.

Although much of this book is denoted to hiking and equipment, I found the topics in the area interesting and helpful. His photographic sections were very good and I learnt several things I didn't know (I am a high level intermediate level photographer).

The author promotes his Chromozone system in this book which I subsequently bought (guess what - it works!). The system is based on the zone system but for colour and not black and white work.

I would recommend this book. It is easy to read, factual, well written and concise.

Although I am not an avid backpacker, my photography club recommended this book and I must say that it's my favorite photography book. I take it with me on every photo trip. It's tattered and torn from use and I will have to buy another one before long. Congratulations to Mr. Campbell for writing a clear and concise book. I know understand exposure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really great book, February 16, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Backpacker's Photography Handbook: How to Take Great Wilderness Pictures While Hiking, Climbing (Paperback)
A thoroughly enjoyable read, chock full of useful tips. Really inspiring. Presents a neat system for rapidly calculating correct exposures, too. Doesn't go into much depth about *why* things work they way they do, but alerts you to situations to watch for and gives you recipes on how to handle them (Example: I still can't figure out *why* a lighter-than-medium color will be underexposed when using a meter's reading -- but I now know that it will be, and I know what to do about it!

3.0 out of 5 stars The Backpacker's Photography Handbook Review, May 23, 2009
This review is from: The Backpacker's Photography Handbook: How to Take Great Wilderness Pictures While Hiking, Climbing (Paperback)
The Backpacker's Photography Handbook is a passionately written guide to outdoor photographic treks, ranging from casual, comfortable trail tours to extended multi-day hiking & photographic adventures. Campbell's extensive experience as a professional outdoor enthusiast provides very practical advice and knowledge for amateur and professional photographers and hiking enthusiasts. Campbell also provides numerous checklists and instructional guides for a wide range of outdoor experiences.

Published in 1994, this book's photographic intruction and advice are based upon outdated analog (film & plate) equipment. Digital equipment is not mentioned in this 15 year old publication; however, much of the information relates to artistic and compositional aspects of photography. Subsequently, the reader will find the information useful beyond any specific type of camera or platform.

This publication is as valuable an outdoor (hiking, climbing, or skiing) resource as a photographic one. Reader's at many levels, from walk-in-the-park amateurs to hard-core ends-of-the-earth professional enthusiasts will find this book to be a worthwhile resource and enjoyable read. The book is filled with outstanding photographs throughout, taken by the author, that reflect the passion of seeking and capturing those perfect outdoor moments.
