4.0 out of 5 stars fairly informative
i am reviewing the 1986 edition, not the revised 1998 edition. i would really give this book 3.5 or 3.75 stars if i could. yes, other reviewers are correct, it does cover very basic ideas, but it is not only geared toward beginning hikers & backpackers. my husband and i are expecting our first child in June 2002, and we don't want to abandon our love of backpacking...

Has some other very basic information as well.

1.0 out of 5 stars No helpful information in book., July 4, 1999

This review is from: Backpacking With Babies and Small Children: A Guide to Taking the Kids Along on Day Hikes, Overnighters and Long Trail Trips (Paperback)
I was very disappointed in this book. I have camped, backpacked, and hiked a fair amount and was hoping for helpful information on doing these activities with children. The information is very basic. If you have been camping even one time, you will already know everything in this book. If you have never been camping, with or without children, you might find a few things helpful. Most of it is common sense.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything I needed to know!, September 20, 1999

This is a very helpful book, full of good information. I found it very reassuring. It is a challenge to even think about taking a very young child into the mountains. We had all our questions answered and felt like we could have a happy, comfortable and SAFE trip. It was successful... We had info about food, safety, equipment, etc... many things that we didn't even think of. Good Book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for anybody taking kids into the woods, May 16, 1996

My mother wrote this book. My children appear in it.Obviously, it is a terrific book. In particular, the advice on being willing to turn back if the weather turns bad is well taken.
