From Library Journal
Gleeson, a noted travel writer and photographer, previously published this work under the title Backroad Wineries of California (Chronicle, 1985) and then revised it in 1989. Now the author has expanded it into two separate volumes, one for each half of the state. This volume features 60 lesser-known wineries in seven areas of northern California: Mendocino County, Sonoma County, Napa Valley to Clear Lake, Winters to St. Helena, the East Bay, the Coastal Mountains, and the Sierra Foothills. For each winery, Gleeson provides wine lists, vintner's choices, address, hours, availability of tastings and tours, presence of picnic areas and retail sales, and directions. While contemplating the wines to be savored, readers can feast their eyes on the author's abundant color photos. This is primarily a purchase for wine connoisseurs and regional or large collections, but its modest price makes it an affordable purchase for any collection.
