Gr. 5-8. With a photo on every spread, books in the new high-interest Backstage Pass series offer a behind-the-scenes look at venues of interest to young people in an informative, visually attractive package. Video begins with a history of music on TV, starting with American Bandstand. It then gets into the evolution of the music video and follows the making of one, beginning with budgets and storyboards and ending with postproduction. Newscast is less linear in approach, and it never really distinguishes between local and national news programs. However, it does give readers a glimpse at how a local newscast is created. Both books also provide some vocational guidance, giving information about jobs in the music and the news business. A glossary and resources, including organizations and Web sites, are appended. The writing can be overly enthusiastic, but kids will learn a lot. Ilene Cooper
