A Kid's Review
Summary: This book is about a little bird dog who gets a home with Justin. Then the puppy get scratch by a cat, bit by a dog stringed by a bee,and peck by a bird. When he started growing up he started to point backward to protect his nose. Opinion: I think this is a very good book because this little puppy doesn't want get his nose hurt so he point backwards instead of frontward. I think it was very funny too because when his noes was sore it blew up like a balloon. Character:The character in this book are Justin who is a little boy,Bill who is the father Carol who is the mother ,and J.C who is the main character because j.c is the dog. Bill Wallace had won 17 state awards on this one book.

5.0 out of 5 stars BACKWARD BIRD DOG, March 27, 2003
By
Re'Shawana (Bellflower, CA USA) - See all my reviews
...This book is about a dog named J.C. He is a bird dog and everyone knows that this kind of dog leads with its nose. J.C. is welcomed to a new home where a cat whacks him on the nose...a dog bites him on the nose...a bee stings him on the nose...and a momma bird pecks him on the nose. All he wants is love and be appreciated by his new family. But how can he point with his nose when everyone is trying to attack it. There must be a better way. I guess this is what happens when you are curious about everything. The part that I liked was when everyone wanted to always attack his nose. Like the first time he saw the cat. "I mean it." His lip curled. "you come any closer, I'm gonna rip your nose off."I mean J.c. wasn't even doing anything to the cat and he gets angry for no reason. "Oooouch! I squealed. "That hurt! You really did...you ripped my nose off."Another part that I liked was when the bee stung him. The bee was getting some pollen from the flower and J.C. asked "Are you getting something to eat? Are you playing down there?" The thing was that the bee didn't even talk. "Yipe, yipe, yipe," I cried and jumped back. The bee had stung him on the nose and it really hurted him. My favorite part was really everything. Because it was very funny and exciting. J.C. was a curious dog who was very confused when it came to certain things. Like when it came to his nose, he always wanted to sniff things and that's why his nose always got hurt. He liked to searched different areas and go on adventures. I guess you can't always be curious about everything you see or hear.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read-aloud for young students!, September 3, 2005
I have read this aloud to K5 and 1st graders during weekly school library visits. It is GREAT for comprehension and encourages listening skills. Students listen intently and are delighted to guess correctly the items described by the backwards bird dog. Will read again this year to new classes when I replace well-worn paperback! 5.0 out of 5 stars A feel good book., September 28, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a great book for any age child to read or to be read to. Even a 4 or 5 year old that enjoys hearing chapter books would enjoy this story. Unlike some of Bill Wallaces adventure books, this is a feel good book about a puppy who is having a hard time adjusting to his new home. Lots of humurous moments in this book as he is bothered by the family cat and another dog on the property. Very cute story.

Any child just getting into a 3rd grade reading level chapter book would really enjoy this story.

Written from the dog's point of veiw.

5.0 out of 5 stars my son loved this, August 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My son read the first chapter to me one night and walked to bed with his nose still buried in it. He finished it in two days and told me all the funny things that happened to poor old JC. I'd do a more in-depth review of the plot, but we only read two chapters together, so I missed a lot of the book. I can tell you that my 7 year old thought it was interesting enough to stay up reading after bedtime, so it must have been a good one.

4.0 out of 5 stars the Backward Bird Dog is a funny book with a good story., May 20, 1999
By A Customer
The Backward Bird Dog is about a Quail hunting puppy who is taken away from his canine family to a new home. On his first day at his new home, JC, as they call him gets bitten on the nose by Chomps another dog, scratched on the nose by Gray the cat, stung on the nose by a bee and pecked on the nose by a bird. He is afraid that he will lose his nose and won't beable to smell or catch Quail. So from then on he protects it the best he can. As he gets older he learns new things such as when to play with Chomps and when not to bother Chomps. Also not to bother Gray Cat when he is mouse hunting. Later he gets to a camp where he learns to be a better bird dog and he wants to make his owner, Carol proud. The first day he is scared and feels abandoned by his owners. Until he meets Big Mike an older dog who tells him that his owners will come back for him , and that he should work hard to be a good Bird Dog so his owners will be proud. JC points quail and fetches and follows scents like a very good quail dog. When his owners come to get him the camp master, Mr. Tommy, says he is a bad pointer. Or is he?

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny, entertaining and warm!, February 2, 1999
By A Customer
Anyone who loves animals and has had special pets will truly enjoy this book. We could easily relate to all the quirky personalities of the family pets and JC's hysterical experiences as he tried to adjust into it. I checked the book out of our local library but realized I needed one of my own to read to my grandchildren.
