This review is from: Backwards to Britain Hb (Hardcover)
Backwards to Britain was written in 1857, after a trip Jules Verne made with a friend from Nantes to Bordeaux, and thence to England and Scotland. It is an accurate travelogue which depicts those times beautifully. Verne was introduced to his publisher by Alexander Dumas, shortly after this, and his publisher signed him to three novels a year for 20 years. The rest is history. This mss was in a trunk when Verne died in 1905, and was re-discovered by his grandson, who wrote about it in his biography of his grandfather. A French publisher read that book, and told the Verne library in Nantes about the discovery. The Library obtained it from the family for much less than it would have sold to a publisher, and as a reward, let the publisher print it. They in turn subcontracted for an English translation from Chambers in Scotland. Hence the first English translation of the book, only a few years after publication of the first French edition, over 140 years after it was written!
Verne himself had Scottish blood, and was particularly excited about visiting Scotland. If you want to know what it was like in those days, what better way to find out than to read of the actual travels of the world's most published author in person!
