Editorial Reviews

BACKWASH tells the tale of three slacker friends and the adventures that ensue after one of them inadvertently robs a bank armed only with a large salami. With echoes of the Marx Brothers and Monty Python; Backwash is a slapstick look at the effects of sudden wealth on three American losers.

It's surprising, silly and fun, with a quick pace.

The free preview made me think the movie might be alright, however, that was the best part out of the seventeen minutes I watched.

It's like watching a tree stooges movie only they forgot the funny.

I'm going to say that the best bits of this miniseries are the beginning and end spots by the guest stars -- Sarah Silverman and John Cho's intros are notably hilarious.

Talking about the main dish, though, Backwash has a playful and quirky sense of humor. It doesn't take itself seriously, which is a strength and a weakness; a strength in that, even if a joke falls flat, you don't get that awful secondhand embarrassment for the guys, because it's obviously just in good fun. The jokes that didn't work for me didn't make me GROAN, which is a bonus in a comedy. The jokes that did work had me laughing out loud in surprise. The pacing is great, even if you dislike it, you won't feel bored out of your mind. The episodes are short and the narration snippets break up the story into manageable little bits.

In any case, it might not be for you. It wasn't really for me, but I didn't regret buying it.

Ever wonder what would have happened if The Marx Brothers had been members of the Monty Python team? If the answer is yes, you've come to the right place. If the answer is no, you're probably more into Les Miserables, in which case you've still come to the right place.
Backwash is the bizarre, stupid and brilliant tale of three grown men who should know better than to get involved with free toasters, down-and-out bank-telling hookers and operatic policemen.
Crammed full with high-end Gilliam-esque* animations and all stitched together with more celebrity cameos than you can shake a salami in a sock at, you have to ask yourself, "How much in poker debts do these people owe Joshua Malina"?
Like a fine wine or a strong cheese, Backwash is the perfect accompaniment to any cultured evening in. Try it on a cracker.
*Gilliam-esque in the sense that the show features animations.

I really enjoyed watching BACKWASH. It's surprising, silly and fun, with a quick pace. The intros are HYSTERICAL. I hope this team of talented writers & actors provides us with more material in the near future. I couldn't get enough!

Horrible, absolutely horrible. It's like watching a tree stooges movie only they forgot the funny.
The only redeeming quality is the chapter intros by various actors and comedians, you will find yourself fast forwarding past the movie, just to catch the chapter openers.
Worst movie I have seen in a long time.

BACKWASH already had me at the ridiculous cast line up they trotted out (Hamm, Silverman, Azaria, Stamos, etc). How great to find that the show happens to be hilarious through and through. You can tell these guys paid attention to every little detail. And boy are there a ton: singing/dancing cops, a musical, animation, stop motion photography, miniature action scenes and so much more. BACKWASH really is a great comic blend of Monty Python, Three Stooges, The Marx Bros, but all the while hitting plenty of pop-culture references for today's audience.

As you can see, I really adored this show and I hope these guys do a 2nd season. This thing belongs on Adult Swim or Comedy Central immediately!
