Editorial Reviews

Review

It s not very often at all that I m reading porn and getting happily distracted by how good the sentences are and how economical the prose is. --Dennis Cooper

The king of intergenerational porn. --Kevin Killian

Natty Soltesz chronicles the sexual tensions and suppressed yearnings that smolder just beneath the surface in small town blue-collar America. Writing like the Stephen King of mansex, Soltesz perfectly captures the details and the moments that a certain breed of men young and old alike experience on their journey along the path to erotic transcendence. --Joe Gage

About the Author

Natty Soltesz s stories have been published in anthologies including Best Gay Erotica 2011 and in the magazines Freshmen, Mandate, and Handjobs. He co-wrote the 2009 porn film Dad Takes a Fishing Trip with director Joe Gage. Since 2000 he s published stories on his website, nattysoltesz.com, and he is a faithful contributor to the Nifty Erotic Stories Archive.

Michael Kirwan was born in NYC late 1953. Kirwan began drawing around age 4-5 to create an imaginarily tolerable universal to escape the reality of his home life. Raised Catholic (but insultingly not molested), he survived his youthful adventures and soon found himself working at the St. Marks Bathhouse in the Village. He had his drawings published first in Stroke magazine 1985. Through the years, he has produced hundreds of illustrations and comics for adult magazines and displayed his work around the world, but he resides in Los Angeles. He earns a meager living selling original artwork to enlightened collectors and producing commission artwork for those who d like their personal fantasies captured on paper. Bruno Gmunder Verlag released a collection of Kirwan s illustrations, Just So Horny, in 2011.

From the author of 428 College St comes this collection of sexual vignettes from Anytown America, a fictional place called Groom, Pennsylvania.

With stories about teenagers who explore their sexual tensions with one another to adults who question choices they've made in their own lives, Backwoods not only presents delicious titillating passages readers come to expect from a work of erotica, but Soltesz throws in the gamut of human emotion that serves to heighten the passion and yearning behind each sexual encounter. Romance, raunchiness, tender and thought-provoking, Backwoods is one of those books bound to resonate on some level with every reader, long after the last page is turned.

I must say that although Backwoods is the effort of a maturing writer, I only gave it four stars whereas I gave his previous book five. While Backwoods is the better book of the two, as a result of Soltesz finely honing his craft, I didn't get to know a couple of the characters as well as I would have liked. The sexually free Jim Cunkleman, the budding sexuality of Sess Roberts and his new friend, Ron, the biker as well as the pervy Mr. Weist are all worthy of further exposition. I'd love to see them appear again in another book.

But I am by no means disappointed in this work. In fact, I own both a physical and Kindle copy of this book.

When Soltesz set out to produce this book, he turned to a community of interested readers and asked for sponsorships so he could commission several pieces of art to accompany the book. The caricatures offered by artist Michael Kirwan underscore the steamy underbelly of indecent secrets that abound in Groom, Pa.

From the closeted to the liberated Backwoods reads like a cross-section of American gay men. The moments captured within the larger back-drop of Groom run from silly to serious. At times they even manage to be quite poignant. Dan Frye's story will be familiar to anyone who remembers having to admit that they might not live up to what society is expecting of them.

All in all I'm quite happy with my purchase. The only thing I would have wished for was more about the Frye men. Hopefully Groom will be revisited in a future book and we can see them revisited there.

I very much enjoy the artistry of Michael Kirwan a very talented illustrator and Natty Soltesz the very entertaining author of this amusing ribald tale.

The stories were great, but the book was to short! Wish there had been more to the book. Did enjoy the stories though.
