THE BEST BASEBALL GAME OUT THERE, EVEN FOR GROWN-UPS!, November 23, 2000
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Backyard Baseball 2001 (CD-ROM)
If you want baseball on the computer, get this game. Backyard Baseball 2001 has 31 Major League stars as kids (2 from the Reds, 1 from each other team) and 30 other players that you can pick for your team. You can play as any MLB team or pick from a list of custom names. You can even create your own player! But the most surprising part of all is that on Backyard Baseball 2001, Frank Thomas is an amazing pitcher (even better than Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling). In fact, he is so amazing, I pitched a perfect game with him once! The only downsides of this game is that you can only pick 9 players for your team (no subs) and that there are some players that you can't pick for your team that other teams can pick. This game is so good, maybe I'm even gonna start a BYB2K1 webpage! Get this game. It's worth the price.

They Should Make More Games Like This!, August 10, 2000
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Backyard Baseball 2001 (CD-ROM)
I've had this game for a long time now, and I've played it more than any other game I own and it's my all-time favorite game. It has tremendous replay value because of its wide selection of modes like single game, season, internet play, practice, and T-Ball mode. I especially like internet mode because it allows you to play with other kids on the net. Parents, don't worry! The internet mode is safe and secured and monitored by the company themselves! I say it is a great game because you can choose from 30 Backyard Baseball player kids and 31 MLB players as kids! That's 61 kids in all to choose for your team! Awesome! But that's not including the custom characters you can make! The controls are EASY! I never experienced anything that was so easy! Just point and click! There are many special pitches and batting types in the game, from spitballs to fireballs and from crazy bunts to aluminum power bats! The special pitches: spitball, fireball, corkscrew, big freeze, zig-zag, slo-mo, and elevator. The special batting types: crazy bunt, aluminum power, under-grounder, and screaming linedrive. Bottom Line: Get this game! It's GREAT! Tip: If you have the game, here's how you can play as Mr. Clanky, the untiring robot with sizzling pitches! Just point your mouse or controller on the robot at the main menu and click on him while holding the shift key!

Most played game my son has!, November 8, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Backyard Baseball 2001 (CD-ROM)
We have all the backyard sports games. My son has had this one since he was about 5 and he's now 9 and he still enjoys it, which is more than I can say for the dozens of other games he has. I would recommend all the backyard sports games, but baseball is probably the best. Awesome...no violence, nothing negative, just good old-fashioned fun!

Backyard Fun!, August 16, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Backyard Baseball 2001 (CD-ROM)
My five year old loves this software. He has both versions and enjoys the 2001 over the previous one. The graphics are superb along with the ability to add some MLB humor. He is able to maneuver around the baseball fields and play an "on-line" game, however, his favorite is creating his own team. He can play alone or with another player. From an academic point of view, he is learning how to read graphs, compare information, and think!

A mom in Tennessee, August 10, 2000

It's August in Nashville and too hot to play ball with my son in the yard for long. This game has been a real summer treat! My boy, Grady, is six, and he's had endless hours of fun creating his team, choosing his ball fields, batting and pitching. He's still playing on the "easy" skill level, so I expect that he will still be enjoying this game even as the World Series rolls around. And hey...it's Macintosh compatible!

Fun for a wide range of ages, November 24, 2000

I'm a mom of two boys, 7 and 11, and we have the other backyard games too. They are games that my sons can play together or alone and have a great time. These are the most popular sports computer games in our family. The kids love the graphics, being able to choose fields and players. These are definitely top-quality products.

4 and a half really, September 19, 2001

This is a great baseball game I liked it better than Triple Play Baseball and I do own both.It is both cheaper and better than Triple Play and the other PS2 baseball games,so you think what makes this game so special,a lot of things. For striking out a batter you get a special which can be used 3 times. To name just a few Elevator,Heater,Corkscrew and Spitball.A Heater is the same as a fastball, but thrown twice as hard.I think most of you know what a spitball is.An elevator is my favorite pitch(that I have unlocked yet, anyway.)After the pitcher releases the baseball it rolls on the ground but when it reaches the plate it goes where you wanted to throw it.Corkscrew looks like a slowball until it reaches the plate spins around a few times then goes where you wanted it to go.Plus you just keep unlocking more when you strike someone out.Now to the batting, you have a little white symbol shaped like a bat which you move around you see a baseball which is where the pitcher is going to throw the ball. There are four boxes on the right side of what you hope to do with the ball if you make contact:power, line drive which is default, grounder or bunt.At first it is a little hard making contact but in a short period of time you will be getting hits easily.Because the players are kids not pros, they make mistakes often on easy(I mean CPU players)you can beat out a bunt, beat out a grounder, turn a single into a double, turn a doubles into triples into homeruns, which is very exciting. This is what makes the game so great, cool batting and great pitching. Also if you get a double play, you get what is called an undergrounder. It is one of the hitting choices with line drive,grounder,etc.,etc.The undergrounder is very cool, when you hit the ball it goes underground for a while.During this time your hitter runs the bases then when they have touched second the ball pops out of the outfield wall,in the confusion your player is still running,if the opposing team has great defense you will get a triple. If they have bad defense you will get an inside the park homerun.Hitting is overall good. Now to defense, defense is ok but could have been better. You click the ball to get it not very entertaining, but ok.Running the bases is fun click to go to next base.Click a small icon in the upper left corner to steal.Overall the best baseball game I have ever played.A must buy,the only reason I didn't give it five stars is because the defense isn't great.

Backyard Baseball not just for kids 5-12, June 19, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Backyard Baseball 2001 (CD-ROM)
I work at a computer store where we sell and repair computers. One benifit of my job is while I'm repairing a computer I can play the games on the customer's system. Last week a system came in claiming it had no sound. The sound worked fine so I called the customer and she added it had no sound in a game she recently installed called Backyard Baseball 2001. even though we do not support software or games I went back to her PC and entered into the game to find out that the sound did indeed work. I called her back to explain her PC was fine and ready for pickup. Since my area was slow that day plus the boss was on vacation I sat down and "tested" the game. I was instantly absorbed in the game. The game looks great the gameplay is simple and well paced and above all Backyard Baseball 2001 is fun. After playing the game for a while I logged on..and ordered the game myself. The only flaw I can see is the box it states "for kids 5-12" I am 26 my co-workers range from 28 to 53 and we all loved the game. When the dreaded time came and the customer wanted her PC back I personally took it to her and admitted I was addicted to Backyard Baseball 2001.

A Hit in Our Household, December 19, 2000

My five-year old can spend hours on this game if we let him, in one sitting! "Dad, didn't you know that Nomar wears number 5, and Cal Ripken, Jr. doesn't hit as well as, say 'Big Mac.'" If your child loves baseball, or simply wants to learn the game, the players and the teams, this is the game for them. In an enertaining way, kids learn the essence of what makes baseball America's Pastime. I recommend this wholeheartedly.
