Just getting started in Biedwatching?, August 22, 2008

This is an interesting package to introduce someone or even yourself to Birdwatching at a very nominal expense. It would be a great present for a young person who has shown a bit of interest in Nature and in Birdwatching; who doesn't even have a pair of binoculars.It would even be welcomed by someone who has just started to enjoy birds around their home,cottage or local park.
All in a neat package you get;
...a pair of binoculars. 4X30 ,that are about as powerful as a pair of
"opera glasses".These are about 1/2 the strength of the binoculars seasoned birders use.They are quite clear and will give one a much better look at a bird than just eyesight.Where they differ from better binoculars is that they will not take much abuse ,especially if dropped.But, if handled carefully,will last quite a while,or at least long enough to see if a better pair would be in order.
...a fold-out Guide covering 62 common birds that can be found across North America.There is a bit of information ,and a good photograph of each bird. It covers only a small number of the 967 bird species that have ever been found in North America,but something to get started with.
...A small book "Attracting Backyard Birds"giving some basic information,many aspects of bird and their surroundings,nesting,feeding songs,identification.etc.
...A small book to use as a journal or notebook to keep notes on bird sightings,birds seen on trips etc.
Make no mistake ,this is a very basic set; and if any interest develops,you will want to expand your horizons by getting a better pair of binoculars,a better "BirdBook" such as "Field Guide to the Birds of North America" by National Geographic(see my review).And above all,join a local Birdwatching club.
This is one of the post popular pastimes in North America.Can be done anywhere,at any skill level and involving any amount of cost you choose to put into it.

Nice present, January 9, 2010

Bought this set for my Mom as a gift. She really liked it as she enjoys looking out at her bird feeder and, using this book, being able to identify the birds she sees. Makes a great present....highly recommend it.
