Fold-out laminated field guide with excellent drawings!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Backyard Birds (Peterson FlashGuides) (Paperback)
This really useful field guide has great drawings of over 100 species found in neighborhoods in US and Canada. Has a simple system to instantly tell you the region and feeding preferences of birds, in other words, where you are most likely to find them. The drawings are beautiful, colorful and accurate, clearly showing the difference between male and female, and defining markings. I've enjoyed mine thoroughly!

Alot of fun!,

My girls and I love this book! What a pleasure to be able to look out our window and now be able to identify the types of birds that live among us. We even now can recognize a bird by sound. This book includes wonderful pictures with easy to read descriptions of the birds and their habits. What a great way to spend time with each other having fun exploring and learning. A book that can be enjoyed at any age.

I purchased this book for a seven year old and think I expected a format more similar to the standard Peterson guide, but obviously with fewer birds. I also felt that more birds could have been included --if a child can read, he can also take in a good bit of information, more than was included here. A pleasant booklet, though, but perhaps most suited to the child who has never really seen or thought about birds previously.

The Peterson guides are a well established in the birding world. I was looking for a good basic introductory book for my young daughter who, like me, enjoys bird watching. This book has a list of the most common birds that we're likely to see in our backyard. I like the way it's divided by feather coloration rather than by species or group of species. This makes it easier for a child to learn to identify the birds in a non-overwhelming way. I plan to buy the rest of the series for our family's field library.

I purchased this for my 4 year old son. He has recently become interested in our fine feathered friends and wanted to learn more. We were also going to participate in the annual Great Backyard Bird Count. We purchased this ahead of time so we could look at it together and discuss the birds in the book. We learned a lot and were able to identify a lot of the birds in our back yard from looking at this book. It teaches you what to look for to help you identify the birds, field markings, behavior, songs, and so much more. This is a great first book for any person wanting to learn more about birds.

Does not group birds or have a U.S. map to show where they would be found.

This book is lightweight and covers the birds we all see at the feeders in our backyards. Information covered includes illustrations, descriptions of the various sounds, habitats, and diet of these common birds. A good starting point for a young person beginning in bird watching.

Wonderful quick guide for new birder,

I wanted to replace a very old and faded bird chart that had hung by my kitchen window for years, and I came across two or three of these laminated fold-up charts. The Peterson charts have the largest illustrations, and are really engaging. I keep these references right by the den window for ease of use, and they have been a solid addition to my birding library, and as I've shared my love of birds with new observers.
Highly recommended for older children as well as adults who'd like a quick visual reference. I'm planning to give one with a bird-feeder as a gift, along with a bag of region-specific seed.

The book was good and interesting. The only bird missing was the Raven, which is the bird I was looking to see and read about. Therefore, I was disappointed it didn't have the Raven in it.
