Product Description

From Children's Software Revue® -- "Subscribe Now!"

This is the third program in the Backyard Sports series, and like the others, it offers an individualized, entertaining introduction to the game of football. Unlike other football CDs, this one features a cast of neighborhood kids as the players. Children can create teams with John Elway playing quarterback and Jerry Rice as their wide receiver, or they can let the computer randomly select from about 25 different players, each with a unique personality. Kids can also choose a playing field and a level of difficulty- we recommend starting off at the easy level. After an introduction from the sportscasters, children pick from 12 offensive or defensive plays to try. Trick plays can spice up the action with sonic booms, jersey switches, or players that suddenly jump 20 feet in the air. Kids can even adjust the weather conditions to make things more interesting. Criticisms are few. The topdown view used while playing makes it tough to distinguish the players. Also, the game is set up for just one player. Multiplayer options would have made the activity naturally conducive to playing with friends or family members. On the positive side, the range of challenge is carefully set with the easy level insuring that kids will have a successful first experience, while the hard level is full of tricky situations. The software is playful and well designed, from the play-by-play sports casting to the between-play banter of the players. Overall, this is an excellent, entertaining program.

5.0 out of 5 stars At the Top of Grade School Kids' Sports Games!, May 14, 2000
This review is from: Backyard Football (CD-ROM)
Boys and girls (and their parents--believe me!) will love this fun, exciting football game from Humongous Entertainment. It features characters familiar from other "Jr. Sports League" series: Easy-going Keisha, lightening-fast Pete, and others of different ages, races, sizes, and abilities.

The action is fast and the selection of plays is great fun (you can also create your own plays!). Passing plays are the most difficult; you might want to encourage your child to focus on running, kicking, and defense, and help him or her with passing. (Our 5-year old eventually got the hang of the whole game). You can set 3 difficulty levels, play a league series culminating in a the "Super-Colossal Cereal Bowl" or play single "pick-up" games, play in preset or random weather conditions, and even make up your own player with different skills (it's fun to name this player after yourself)!

A few complaints: Once again, Pete Wheeler is the athletic, but intellectually challenged kid. I found some of his dialogue offensive--but it offers a good chance to talk with your kids about stereotypes. The compilation of player stats is good, but not as complete as the Baseball game offered by Humongous. A creative and fun addition is the inclusion of several NFL players (including Steve Young, Jerry Rice, Randall Cunningham, Barry Sanders, Brett Favre, and John Elway) as kids playing along with the Jr. Sports League cast. Now, not that I ever play this game, but I recommend Keisha on defense, Pete at running back, Barry Sanders at tight end, Annie as kicker.....

(I also recommend highly the Backyard Baseball Game by Humongous.)

This series rules! I like this one the best 'cause it has the most features and I love football. Also, you can choose from pro players and even make your own custom player! You can even change your playbook and create new plays! The only problem is they only have these features in Backyard Football. This game should have 10 stars!
