5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource! September 17, 2009
Format:Paperback
I found this book at the library, and liked it so much that I'll be buying my own copy shortly. I have several books on medicinal herbs. This is the best one I've seen for telling you exactly how to prepare and use the herbal remedies in the book. She doesn't cover everything, but it's a very good beginning, and her directions on preparation and use will apply to other herbs that are mentioned in other books.

5.0 out of 5 stars My backyard pharmacy November 4, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm a book junkie. Yes, I admit it. But I have gotten more picky, which is why I hesitated for at least a week before ordering this book. And yes, I'm glad I gave in to the urge. I have read it through once and am destined to read it bit by bit many more times. There is enough science to satisfy the nurse in me, but also a strong connection to the more esoteric aspect of being an herbalist. My formal herbal study has been in the Celtic tradition so Julie Bruton-Seal's selection of plants is ideal for me. A large number of her favorite plants are growing near me. She has given me a different view of many different plant properties to consider. My back yard is my major pharmacy, and this lovely resource will broaden its scope and capability. The Celts had a strong thread of practicality that included using what was close at hand. I am following my roots and appreciate additional guidance in the journey.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Reference January 13, 2012
By Leo58
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The book covers a very very short list of medicinal herbs that are mostly common in Great Britain. Presentation of information, print quality and photographs are very good, unlike some books these days that appear to run off a cheap copier. I like the overview of herbal applications. References are made to modern herbalists comments on various uses of herbs. I would like to see a volume 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful information June 4, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is very cool. While being quite technical, it is also very user friendly. My beau already knows much about herbs and their uses, but even he found some pretty cool, neat and new things in it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Tons of Great Information, Frustrating Set Up October 14, 2012
Format:Paperback
I wanted to rate this book more highly because it does have a ton of useful information in it, and several points strongly in its favor:
* The color photos are helpful and well done
* The recipes are largely simple and easy to follow
* It covers a huge number of plants, and most of them are things people can realistically expect to find or grow themselves without trouble
* The writing is clear and easy to understand.

Unfortunately, a couple details seriously hamper the effectiveness of those great traits.

* The print is very small and the green font used to mark headings or differentiate text is so dark that it does not stand out well, seriously hampering their usefulness or visibility. I feel like I would need to go through this with a highlighter and block things out in different colors myself to be able to find anything reasonably quickly when I wanted it again.

* Maybe this is just personal preference, but there's no listing or discussion of remedies by condition. Although you can find conditions listed in the index (depression, for example) with page numbers for plants that might be applicable to treating them there is no direct, easy-to-reference discussion of the options for treating a given condition, what factors needs to be taken into consideration in selecting the method for your situation, etc. So unless you memorize the book, you're going to end up looking up and re-reading six or different herbs/plants every time you want to treat something specific to figure out what your options are and how to select the best one. Not exactly what I'd hope for in a reference book.

* Finally, there is no organized discussion of how to set up an herbal medicine cabinet, so the speak, using the knowledge in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a keeper! April 29, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is very informative, but simple and not overwhelming at all, which is great. Especialy if you are a beginner. The plants in there are very common and I'm familiar with most. Originally I got the book from the library, but then decided that it's a must-have book. So I just ordered one!
