Grade 3-6?Ryden has produced many attractive nonfiction titles. Now she extends her expertise into fiction where she has successfully merged a wealth of information about wildlife with a moving story of friendship and families. Lindsay, 10, narrates a plot filled with contrasts and emotions, but her best friend is the more complex character here. Greta, a confirmed animal lover and healer at heart, draws Lindsay into a series of animal rescues while family tensions swirl around them. Lindsay's parents are well off and well educated, but her peripheral knowledge of Greta's family's financial problems trouble her as evidence of their growing poverty mounts. These are admirable children, deeply committed, independent, and supported by loving and intelligent adults, including a generous school librarian. When unjust laws threaten the girls and the animals they are caring for, issues of civil disobedience are brought into the story and their friendship and values are strengthened in a balanced and satisfying resolution that hints of more to come. Soft pencil illustrations perfectly complement the mood of the book and will attract younger readers.?Susan Oliver, Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System
