The smell is pleasant, and leaves a cool feeling behind on the skin.

It looked like one fever blister above my lip which oozed, stung, itched, and pained.

Always overpriced in stores; a less expensive CVS product was available.

Viroxyn cold sore (lip) treatment (desribed as a near miracle cure) has the exact same effective ingrediant in the exact same proportion as Bactine. But Viroxyn costs an arm and a leg! AND...Bactine adds a pain reliever! So, when you feel a cold sore coming on, soak a cotton ball with Bactine (instead of Viroxyn )and virorously rub on and around your budding cold sore (don't rub so hard as to break the skin). And don't ingest any! Then let that Bactine do its work. Your pain should diminish and your lip sore should heal much faster. And you didn't have to pay over $15 for a one time dose of Viroxyn (a cotton ball's worth). But, check your facts! Look up both Viroxyn and Bactine online and see for yourself! Also, you might want to augment your treatment with a zinc-based cold sore ointment too (I think Bactine may have an ointment like that).

Here's the BEST way to treat a cold sore based on empirical evidence collected over 15 years of dealing with them. I have reduced outbreak time from 2+ weeks when I first started getting them to 3-4 days TOTAL healing.
How you react in the first 12 hours is critical. After a couple years of suffering cold sores, you get the pattern down and can troubleshoot early enough to almost completely stop it. As your doc will say, as time goes on, the outbreaks typically get far less severe. Some people even just "outgrow" it. My lucky husband.
So first you feel a tingle. Or a pain in the jaw area. First indications are as unique as fingerprints. Just know that if your lips feel weird at all, that might be your unique signal to tune in to a potential outbreak. I typically get cold sores when I'm even just a little dehydrated or sick.
In the first 24 hours especially, if you have these 4 things, you can maybe even stop it from coming up:
1. Lysine--I take about 4 right as symptoms come on--huge difference and the only thing that can totally stop
2. ice--apply directly to lip and hold
3. Bactine--the miracle virus killer
4. Abreva--keeps the skin in tact and actually "shrinks" the appearance of the sore for public appearances. Stay away from Zilactin--it peels off the scab. Carmex is ridiculous--NEVER use it.
As soon as you feel it coming on, alternate ice and Bactine-soaked cotton ball at least twice an hour.I typically do five minutes ice, five minutes Bactine. Then apply Abreva at bedtime. Ice makes a BIG difference in the severity of your outbreak. It reduces the duration of swelling significantly. Keep taking Lysine.
Do not ever ever ever touch or pick at the sore, no matter how much it looks like you can just "pop" it. You can't.

Introduced in 1950, the year after I was born, BACTINE is one of those venerable consumer products that, unlike chocolate Flavor Straws and X-Ray Spectacles, has withstood the test of time because it works so well. Its use is limited to superficial injuries (minor cuts, scrapes, burns) of the upper skin layer, but it's surprisingly effective at diminishing pain and preventing infection. And one of its most attractive ancillary attributes is a clean, unique smell that I can't quite put my finger on - perhaps a combination of peppermint, eucalyptus and menthol. Indeed, just removing the cap from the bottle in my medicine cabinet brings back all the cherished childhood memories of the cuts and scrapes I acquired while dressed in my Superman costume. Trying to fly by jumping off the top of the front steps can be injurious.

Nowadays, I find the smell of the medicine so manly and appealing that I'm tempted to use it as an aftershave. One can't go out dressed as Superman smelling like a sissy.

I was reading reviews on Amazon about various cold sore topical medications and numerous people mentioned Bactine. I had never heard of using it for cold sores and thought I would try it. I bought in on Amazon because I was in Mexico and going to be home in a couple days, so no matter what I ordered I knew it would be waiting for me when I got home. Thank you Amazon Prime! Anyway, I put the Bactine on a Q-tip held it on my lip for a couple minutes. I could actually feel it doing something! I have used it for 2 days and it is already going away. As soon as I felt that initial tingle is when I ordered so it never had a chance to get big and thanks to the Bactine it wont. One Happy Camper!

I love this product...prefer sqeeze to spray as I can apply directly or via sterile cotton. Initally used on my kids....Now my grandkids. But mostly for my doggy to eliminate scratching due to his allergies. The lidocaine is wonderful anti itch. Works great.

Yes, I read other reviews comparing Viroxyn, Walgreens version and CVS versions....looks like SAME ingredients. I woke up with a cold sore starting up after a weekend of eating and drinking bad things, which I know bring them on but did it anyway. Here I am, looking for quick help, found the Bactine information...hey I have some in the medicine cabinet...just used it...and WooHoo! Made swelling go down within a couple of minutes and has stopped the tingling/swelling/spreading thing. Yes, you have to work it into the sore, slightly uncomfortable, but nothing compared to the pain & embarrassment a full blown cold sore brings. I'm extremely happy and will always make sure I have fresh bottle of Bactine at all times! Lovin' all things Bactine--Good Luck :0)
