Do you remember Audie Murphy? He was the most decorated American combat soldier in World War II. And when he tried to parlay that gaudy rep into a career in Hollywood, it's no surprise that the movie audience insisted on pigeonholing him into playing those noble hero roles. BAD BOY is Audie Murphy's first starring role, and, surprisingly, it casts him against type. He plays Danny Lester, who at 13 was a runaway and today is a hardened, 17-year-old fugitive from the law. When caught after a botched hold-up attempt, Danny goes before the judge and is remanded to the custody of Marshall Brown (Lloyd Nolan) who heads up the Variety Clubs Boys Ranch at Copperas Cove, Texas. This Boys Ranch happens to be a rehabilitation farm for juvies. It passes for home and represents a last gasp at changing their lives while they serve out their sentences.

Danny Lester has got this tiny smirk planted on his face. The skeptical judge, before allowing custody to the idealistic Marshall Brown, tries to warn him: "Statistical summaries pretty well prove that one delinquent in 97 is a hopeless case." And from jump Danny Lester looks to be that one in 97. Danny exudes a polite veneer that masks an indifferent disposition. Or is it self-loathing? Danny is aloof and prickly and prone to fights and exhibits a blatant disregard for authority. Marshall Brown believes that something happened to Danny to make him turn out this way. He digs into Danny's past.

I found BAD BOY - which came out in 1949 and was also known as THE STORY OF DANNY LESTER - to be an arresting watch. It's got a solid supporting cast, headed up by Lloyd Nolan and by James Gleason as an ex-Navy man and currently Marshall Brown's right hand man.

Audie Murphy, despite making is first starring role appearance here, delivers the same quality performance as his later films. Bad Boy is a thoughtful, hard-hitting drama that immediately pulls you in before revealing a plot that is far more complex than first appears. Prepare to be lifted to the heights of hope and the depths of despair before the run time is complete.
