About the Artist
Soul Brains, formerly known as Bad Brains, originally formed in Washington, DC in 1977 and named after the Ramones song "Bad Brain". The Bad Brains are cited as the main influence for some of the biggest rock bands of all time and are widely considered the pioneers of hardcore punk. The Bad Brains have broke up and reformed several times over the last 30 years, the group's classic lineup features singer H.R., guitarist Dr. Know, bass guitarist Darryl Jennifer, and drummer Earl Hudson. Bad Brains self titled debut album was released in January 1982 on New York's ROIR Records, "Rock for Light", was released in 1983 and produced by Ric Ocasek of The Cars. 1986's "I Against I" was released on SST Records, seen by some as their finest recording. The title track's video was shown repeatedly on MTV, as well as the band's performance was used in MTV's promotional footage. In 1995 the original band got back together for the first time in five years, Madonna (a fan from the early 80's), signed the Bad Brains to her Maverick Records label for the release God of Love.
The first couple Bad Brains albums took the sounds of Punk Rock and Reggae music to build a sound that influenced an entire generation of musicians, such as the Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Living Colour, Rage Against the Machine, Henry Rollins and many, many more.
