Book Description

“When you’re in my hospital you’re not family. You’re prey!

“If you’re coming after me, don’t do it in a hospital. That’s my domain. And don’t piss me off in the real world and expect a smooth hospital stay because I have a long memory, and no one is exempt. Before you bully me in a bar, embarrass me on a date, or refuse to replace the crappy car you sold me, think about this: you’ll never be more vulnerable in your life than when you’re spending the night in a hospital. When you’re here, you’re not family. You’re prey!”
--Dr. Gideon Box

Reader Comments

“Wild and crazy! After reading Bad Doctor, I may never set foot in a hospital again—even as a visitor!”

“If you like Donovan Creed, you’re going to love Bad Doctor!”

“Bad Doctor hooked me from the first sentence! I kept thinking “Just one more chapter,” but I couldn’t stop. When there were no pages left to turn I was shocked to find I had spent the entire afternoon reading this book!”

5.0 out of 5 stars Creed's Craven Cousin April 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Gideon Box, John Locke's latest creation, is a dissolute sociopath with one redeeming characteristic: he's the world's greatest pediatric surgeon. He's also an angry, confused, depressive swine with the bedside manner of Charles Manson on crack. In other words, (for fans of Locke's other series) he's like Donovan Creed, the contract killer, but without the heart of gold.

Box needs intense diversions to help maintain his sanity under the pressure of trying to save lost-cause infants in their final death throes. He's given up on gambling in favor of dangerous sexual liaisons.

This time he stumbles a little too close to the flame, and it almost costs him his life.

As in all Locke's novels, the pace is blinding, the characters are pedal to the metal, and the dialogue breezes. He's a master of hidden agendas and furious plot reversals.

BAD DOCTOR is no exception. Several characters from his previous works appear in this one, including the mysterious Rose, but it stands alone fairly well.

It is suggested to go back and read all the books in order, of course, which is not as daunting as it may sound. The novels are short and one could probably mow down the entire library in a week. I digested BAD DOCTOR in an afternoon.

One quibble might be that Gideon Box and Donovan Creed are almost the same character--right down to their taste in women and all things sexual. Their occupations may be different but their sensibilities are basically identical. It didn't bother me much. I was too busy laughing.

A great read for those of us who like to read for fun, BAD DOC is a blast.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Locke Page-Turner April 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
John Locke is a writing machine, cranking out multiple hit novels per year, and always entertaining me in the process. Bad Doctor introduces Dr. Gideon Box to the "Locke-verse," another colorful character with some amazing personality defects that make the reader love to hate him. I was able to breeze through this fast-paced novel in only a day, which is par for the course with Mr. Locke's novels: they are on the short side, action-packed, darkly comic, and go down nice and smooth. And long-time Locke fans will be happy to see characters from his other novels popping up for brief but welcome cameos.

1.0 out of 5 stars Please, no more Dr. Box. July 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
First and foremost I want to say that I LOVE all of John Locke's books and I have read his Donovan Creed series two times, they are that good. This book was not. It was actually painful to even get through it.

All the wonderful, witty ways of his books are completely lost in this one. Dr. Box is gross, obnoxious, unfunny and a really bad character to base a book on. The story really lags to.

I couldn't recommend this book to anyone especially a John Locke fan.

Sorry, it was that bad.

one star was generous

1.0 out of 5 stars Impressively Bad June 1, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I dumped this one from my kindle, early on. The book isn't entertaining and I certainly didn't find it amusing. It must have been an easy "write" for Mr. Locke.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ludicrous April 24, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is beyond puerile. It has no plot, it just rambles about an impossible character, supposedly a world renowned surgeon who kills or sexually assaults people for fun or in revenge for personal slights. He breaks into people's homes while they are absent and assumes their identity, again, just to amuse himself. Even the sex misses, it is not erotic, just a mention that something sexual happened. There is no character development, the characters are all flat cardboard figures, the dialogue is improbable, the scenes implausible. It includes conjoined "Siamese" twins who are hitmen and spend their time arguing about their sex life, one is gay, the other hetero. They apparently are so inept that they need to discuss beforehand how they will go about doing something like turning around. If it was comedy this might work, but it isn't comedy, there is nothing funny about it. This book is rubbish, not worth reading. It would not pass muster as a comic book, it certainly fails as a novel. There is something extremely suspicious about the number of high rated reviews - I don't believe that they are genuine.

1.0 out of 5 stars This book was horrible! August 31, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the first book I've read by this author and it will be the last. I cant believe I spent money on this poorly written book. The stereotypes were way over the top, not well developed, and tedious. I realize this is a piece of fiction, but....come on! I wasted about 10 hours of my life on this book. I honestly thought I must have mistakenly downloaded a self published book by some teenaged misfit. Dont waste your time on this book. I would have given it zero stars if I could.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bad Doctor : Gooooooooood Review:) April 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Another great hit and it only took me 12 hours
If not for sleep would have done it in less.
I believe my Kindle was going at warp speed the way those pages were reading.
So excited to get one of your works to read again, didn't remember it was text to speech enabled. Lol

The conjoined Siamese twin hitmen/hitman are a great twist.

Dr. Box's humor a mixture of Dr. House meets Donavan Creed.

Yet with the introduction of Kathleen and Addie makes me wonder if Dr. Box is not one of Donavan's assumed personas.

Then of course, the ever present witch Rose as the highest qualified nurse in the business. Hmmmmm

Mr. Locke you have done it again.

LOVED IT!!!!!!!!

You have me all psyched waiting for the next Dr. Box and of course Donavan Creed 10.... Hmmm or will there be a Dr. Box, Creed, Carpenter meet up in the distant future.

One of your avid fans.
