More accessible, more tuneful,

More accessible than the first album, just as experimental in spots, this "Takeovers" album hits all the right notes. The first half of the album hits us with some amazing pop-and-rock songs, the second half finds Pollard's sense of humor and the Takeovers sensibility for experimentalism taking center stage for numbers like "Kicks as the Gym" and "Music for Us". The album closer "My Will" brings to mind songs from GBV circa the early-90s with it's powerful hook and noisy production values. Great record!

Excellence in experimental Pollard offerings continues with this record. It is always disturbing to me when I like a Pollard collaboration on first listen. It makes me wonder if there is still a multi-faceted gem lurking for more listens that will grow with me for years to come. This might be the situation here, but it is too early to tell. I am three listens in and I think the record is a triumph of accessibility for the novice Pollard. Simple rock that has a lingering complexity and begs for more listens. Your friends will like this one right off though. I recommend listening at near deafening volumes with copious amounts of beer and whatnot.

This disc grabbed me right from the start. How does Bob (& friends) keep coming up with such amazing music? If you are a Robert Pollard or GBV fan you really can't go wrong with this disc.
"You're At It" - Wow! Great opener. I loved this song the first time I heard it. "Little Green Onion Man" - One of my personal favorites. Great bass line. Bob reminds me of Gabriel era Genesis on this one. I havn't been able to get this song out of my head for a week! "Father's Favorite Temperature" - Another classic! Great vocals & Lyics. One of Bob's best in my opinion. "Molly & Zack" - Yet another mini masterpeice! An acoustic number with nice keyboard work. Very original. "Pretty Not Bad" - a 70's sounding rock song with a sneering Bob and his fake english accent. Cool! "Smokestack Bellowing Stars" - Another song that will really stick in your head. I really like the vocal effect here. A classic. "I Can See My Dog" - This one has an R.E.M. vibe to it. Great guitar work. Yes, another great song. "The Jester of Helpmeat" - Short but sweet and trippy. Nice. "Tracks 9 - 11" - These sound like out-takes to me but are still interesting. "My Will" - A fantastic closing number. Chris Slusarenko's bass work on this disc is really impressive and Bob's vocals and melodies are, well, phenomenal. I hope these guys continue to create great music like this for a long, long time.
