Very disappointing,

I loved Deborah Holland in Animal Logic, and I rather like her solo albums Freudian Slip and Book of Survival. Both of those have a song or two I'd call "stinkers" due to cringe-worthy lyrics (in particular "Happy Birthday You're Turning 40"). Those were the exception, so I was looking forward to "Bad Girl Once...". But to me, the whole thing is a stinker!It's the lyrics. They seem trite. Neither me nor my wife can stand to hear the whole album at once due to that. I like lots of different styles of music, and I've never written a review here as a hatchet job. Now that I think of it, I probably have not written any music reviews. The only reason I'm writing now is to let people know they should not just buy this one based on name recognition. You'd better listen to what you can first to see. If you have her other albums and think the lyrics are all really good, then I suppose you'll like Bad Girl Once. But if you think Ms. Holland has had an occasional trite or silly tendency before, I think you'll find Bad Girl Once is much more so.

Deborah Holland Continues to Grow as an Artist!!,

Once again I get a chance to review one of the finest writers and singers of our time! I have all of her CDs and this may not be my favorite, but it is wonderful! Bad Girl Once But I'm A Soccer Mom Now gives us an insight into who the real person is and a chance to see her humor,(My Mother Would have a Cow!).Her music makes you think and look into yourself and realize that she is not much different from me and it shows her growth from the Animal Logic days. Keep Up the Great Work!!!

Deborah Holland recently came back to my radar screen with her work with Cindy Bullens & Wendy Waldman as one of The Refugees on their excellent new CD Unbound. I'd followed Holland from Animal Logic days and have her solo CDs. "Bad Girl Once" was the lone holdout from my collection. I'm glad I picked up a copy. "Waiting for the Fire" is a lovely track with a wistful harmonica (I think) giving a tinge of sadness to this Holland samba, "It seems like yesterday you would beg me to stay; You couldn't bear to see me go, closer than skin to skin, our souls exchanged within, Now you're someone I barely know." I have a recording of Stephen Foster's "Hard Times Come Again No More" by Eastmountainsouth that spent time in my personal top ten. Holland's arrangement uses what sounds like percussive touches from her keyboard as the track builds grandly, "There's a song that will linger forever in our ears, Oh hard times come again no more." Deborah has a number of humor songs on this set that work well and make her a musical cousin of Sally Fingerette or The Four Bitchin' Babes. "Bad Girl Once (Soccer Mom Now)," "Song About Sex," & "Chain Stores, Malls & Restaurants" all pack a punch as they put a smile on your face. Holland takes "Sloop John B" that The Beach Boys had a hit with decades back & creates an edgy track with nervous percussion. Wendy Waldman joins on background vocals and as co-writer for "On My Way," a bittersweet song of facing uncertainty, "The needy, the sick & the poor are waitin' for Jesus & me; They're forming a line headed right to my door, but Jesus is busy til 3." "Bad Girl Once" is a satisfying set from this excellent singer. Enjoy!
