FUN MUSIC WITH SERIOUS MUSICAL CONTENT,
By A Customer
This review is from: Bad Habits (Audio CD)
I stumbled upon this recording by complete accident. I was searching for Hudson Ford records when I discoverd they had made this album after Hudson Ford called it a day. All I can say is that this CD is fantastic! It is really fun to listen to, as there is no heavy, serious mood lurking in the shadows. It is Punk without being to serious about it. And with musical talent such as John Ford and Richard Hudson (both formerly of The Strawbs and Hudson Ford) writing most of the songs as well as sharing production duties, there is no shortage of musical content or great musicianship either. And if you like this, I urge you to check out the second Monks album, "Suspended Animation", as it is just as much fun to listen to.

Bringing back memories of Lake Muscoka finally found on CD,

I used to listen to this on vinyl in the late 70's as my friends and I partyed in a cottage on Lake Muskoka. I am still playing the album even though it is warped and has beer spilled on it. Now on CD it is probably one of the most fun "Punk" albums ever released. It is the sounds of the more carefree 70's when fun ruled the days and political correctness had yet to be born.

Growing up some friends got hold of a copy of this album on tape which we wore out. Now at last , and almost 20 years later I've found it on CD!!. Full of fun songs that will rock your party. Some real gems on this one. Nice legs, shame about her face.

Don't Get Fooled Again - These are DIFFERENT Monks,

PLEASE BE ADVISED! THESE ARE NOT THE MONKS FROM "BLACK MONK TIME". I am not saying this album is bad OR good (well, actually it is kinda trite), just that THIS ISN'T the same 1960s US GIs in Germany and that whole scene.

Finally found it on CD! Thank God!,

This album was huge in Canada (well, Ontario anyway) in the late '70s/early 80's. I wore out an album and a cassette and have been looking for the CD for years! "Drugs in my pocket", "Johnny B. Rotten", "Nice legs shame about her face" were all big and we all knew all of the words (sung, of course, with the appropriate accents). I introduced the album to my American husband when we met in college in the late '80's and he is grooving that we will now have it on CD!

Can't believe I found it,

I grew up in Toronto and took this tape from High School to my Fraternity in College - I lost the tape in some drunken stupor after we had played it every day for a year. This tape defines punk rock the way it was meant to be -- fun, raw and not too serious. Get it if you like basic punk that pokes fun at everything and rocks at the same time.

If Devo came out of Great Britain, this is what "Q. Are We Not Men? A. We Are Devo!" would sound like. A handful of guys basically having fun and making fun of some of the stuff to come out in the late 70s. After 20 years, it's still funny and still rocks. At least one member, as I recall, is from the Strawbs."I Ain't Gettin' Any" and "Nice Legs Shame About Her Face" got some mild airplay at the time.

One Awesome Recording With Well Above Standard Energy Output,
By Rocknscrolls (Calgary, AB Canada) - See all my reviews

This band has more great tracks on this studio work than probably most groups have on Greatest Hit CD's. The Monks here are in a class of their own, focussing on Punk attributes but not in the elaborate way. The songs are mostly distinct, confident and worry-free while simultaneously providing subtle warning(s) about what in life can become of you if respect is not given to concern. What I like especially is the fact John Ford sings without hiding his British roots accent - a quality most British singer/songwriters blend around (although so `humbly` make sure to establish with talk and interviews). The work throughout includes upbeat, sorted originals - again all energy boosters at heart. Albeit the tracks tend to get a bit repetitious in style, for such an inspired group that only came to release two albums in three decades, I choose in particular to leave that aspect alone. Unfortunate the band had so much talent yet ultimately not enough motivation to keep itself consistent on level. Nevertheless, this album proves to rock fans of near every dimension that quality for the most part does in fact excel over quantity. An album I recommend (as the majority of other reviewers do) for any devoted CD collector, enabling he/she again the chance to feel musically significant or established...

I LOVE *these* Monks!!!!!!!,
This review is from: Bad Habits (Audio CD)
I can't tell you how excited I am to find this on CD! I bought the album in the late '80s for $20 (which was a lot then) and now all I've been able to find is "The Monks" from "Black Monk Time" and this is not them. The (other) Monks are more of a garage band, while (these) Monks are Power Pop, on the realm of The Records, Shoes, etc. Definitely worth getting!!!!

Outstanding. I grew up with these upbeat pop tunes and they always pick me. Funny songs. Unlike so many bands across the pond, they don't try to sound like yanks when they sing...
