3.0 out of 5 stars WHOO, the steely eyes of Agnes...
Bad Karma is a good book under the psuedonym of Andrew Harper. The most horrifying scenes involve obscure and scandalous flashbacks of the past lives of S&M Agnes, psycho-at-large. These scenes are truly scary, truly. Trey, psychiatrist treating Agnes becomes prey to her murder game as she escapes a mental ward and follows Doc to his vacation spot. Let it be known...

4.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!, August 31, 2000
This review is from: Bad Karma (Paperback)
Clegg wrote an out of the park homerun when he wrote his book.I read over half of the book in one sitting, it's that good. Honestly, make sure you have the time to spend with this book, you won't want to put it down either.

As our story opens, Trey Campbell is on a vacation. He works at Darden State Hospital. One woman (Agnes Hatcher) who is a "guest" at Darden feels that Trey is her one true love, and wants to be with him. Even if it means that she will kill his family and anyone who gets in her way. She does escapes (and does a horrible thing to a nurse) and begins her quest. I can't give away to much, but trust me, this book is fantastic. The climax is a real page turner. I last sentence of the book really hit home for me. I wish I could tell you more, but I dont' want to ruin this wonderful novel.

If you buy this book (and you should) I promise you two things. 1) You will have a hard time putting it down and 2) Before you go to bed, you will want to check your windows and doors to make sure they'er locked.

This book kept me up reading until it was nearly morning and this is tough to do since I have no problem putting most books down. The author Andrew Harper wastes no words or time getting the action going and upping the suspense at every turn. BAD KARMA is one of the freshest and truly terrifying thrillers I've read in years and Agnes Hatcher is one of the best murderesses I've ever found in literature.

See what you think. I really enjoyed this book.

I'm not telling tales out of school by saying that Harper is Clegg...it's on the copyright page. That said, let's start. BAD KARMA is Doug Clegg Lite. It's primarily character-driven and paces like a shark cruising the bay for a human snack. It's a tale of Trey Campbell, a psychiatrist for the criminally insane. It also "stars" Agnes Hatcher, the female Hanibal Lecter of the hospital. Trey is on vacation when, during a very spooky and effective scene, Agnes escapes...and goes looking for Trey to right a wrong that Agnes believes was done to her over 100 years ago. Follow me so far? Trey is on a California island called Catalina with his family and Agnes comes out to spoil it...forever! Anything else about the plot is pure spoiler. I liked this novel quite a bit...but if you LOVE Clegg, take this one with a grain of salt. When I think of Clegg's novels like GOAT DANCE, NEVERLAND, THE CHILDREN'S HOUR and DARK OF THE EYE, I think about well-written deep characterizations, subplots above subplots and scenes of terror and, occasionally, eye grabbing gore. Harper is into fast moving scenes, a character introduction that's brief enough so you can follow along and heart-stopping action. It may not be the most original novel ever written, but it's well written and fun. It's a slim novel that will be able to be read in one or two sittings and well worth the time...until the new Clegg novel, THE HALLOWEEN MAN, hits stores in late `98. Recommended for Clegg fans and fans of high-paced non-thinking action.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not bad killing for a female!, July 1, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Bad Karma (Paperback)
I had ordered this book off of amazon.com, and I truly enjoyed my purchase. With the short chapters--and boy a couple sure were short--I could follow the story easily. Agnes sure is one devilish, not to mention clever and deceptive, brute! She's the kind of killer that would make the reader have chilling thoughts, so please please PLEASE do not read this during the daytime! It was meant for darkness. Darkness, especially with the ending. This would make an excellent movie if the characters' long explanations of the case study were cut significantly. Great book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Till death do us part, May 11, 2000
By
This review is from: Bad Karma (Paperback)
Don't start this one unless you have an entire afternoon for it! If not, you'll be late for every appointment because it's impossible to put down.

Trey Campbell takes a much-needed family vacation on beautiful Catalina Island. Sounds cozy. But Trey is a psych tech at a hospital for the criminally insane, and a particularly brilliant, particularly psychotic patient of his escapes (after some gruesome on-site activities). Psychotic Agnes goes in search of Trey who is the object of her affection; she's convinced they've shared past lives and it is their destiny to be together once again. Imagine "Fatal Attraction" with a female Hannibal Lecter. Trey scrambles to protect his family from the killer he once thought could be saved from herself. Douglas Clegg once again pulls together some chilling elements to create a fast-paced, roller coaster thriller. Wait till you see how a notorious English serial killer figures into all this. This one is a fun, quick read!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great nasty reading, April 25, 2000
This review is from: Bad Karma (Hardcover)
Trey Campbell, a psychiatrist to the mentally insane, is on much needed vacation with his wife and kids. As his luck would have it one of his most dangerous inmates, Agnes Hatcher AKA the surgeon because of her propensity to skillfully remove body parts, escapes. She believes she shares past lives with Trey and sets out to fulfill their destiny and will destroy anyone who gets in her way. This is a chilling, taut, fast-paced story that was impossible for me to put down because the author creates such a fascinating villain: a pretty, petite girl turned into a savage monster. I was repulsed and riveted and enjoyed it completely.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Page Turner, February 1, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Bad Karma (Paperback)
Bad Karma by Andrew Harper is one of the most page turning novels to come out in the past year, and a major contribution to the literature of the plot-driven thriller.

When Trey Campbell and his wife and kids vacation on beautiful Catalina Island, they have no idea of what's in store for them. Trey is a psychiatric technician at a state hospital for criminal justice in southern California, where he has worked with some of the most brutal cases the legal system could throw at an institution. Agnes Hatcher was a particularly nasty killer, but she's been locked up for over a decade. However, she and Trey developed an unusual relationship in which he felt some sympathy for a woman that others called a monster.

But that changed when Agnes attacked a doctor, savagely, purportedly from something Trey Campbell had said to her.

Since then, Trey has known that she is a dark soul. But now, he's considering quitting his job. As he and his wife relax on a boat in the Pacific, how could they know that Agnes Hatcher has escaped her bonds and is now making her ruthless way directly to them -- to take the one thing she wants more than anything in this life:

the heart and soul of her beloved, Trey Campbell.

I loved this book. It is a wild and fast ride, and yeah it definitely skates over some detail, but this works in the book's favor. This is one of those books you will not want to put down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bad Karma is shocking!, June 14, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Bad Karma (Paperback)
I read Bad Karma at a clip, not being able or interested in putting it down. For summer reading that's fun, trashy, shocking and thrilling, Bad Karma is up there with the best. At first I thought this must be a pen name for someone like Dean Koontz, but then I saw it was Douglas Clegg on the copyright page. Man, this book is one of those guilty pleasures--non stop action and interesting twists and turns. Right when I thought I had it all figured out, it veered off in a fairly horrifying direction. It was a shock to discover such an entertaining paperback! I recommend this with gusto!
