Omigosh do we love Bad Kitty in our house! I have Bruel's other book, "Boing!", which was age-perfect for my son at the time (great book for the 2-3 yr old set). Now Bad Kitty is out and my son is now 4 1/2 and he had made us read it to him 3 times a night for the past 5 nights. So far, still fresh - even to the adults!
I seriously can't believe I'm the first one to review this book - so I get to tell you to GO GET IT NOW, it's hilarious and sweet, it reinforces the alphabet ("Hey! That's a T, Mommy!") without being painfully 'educational' (read: boring), it's very inventive, but most of all: The illustrations are just wonderful. We love our Bad Kitty.

Alphabet book with attitude,

I found this at the library the other day and took it out for my kids - when we finally got around to reading it we had to keep it longer - the boys wanted to read it every night, take it to church, take it to school...
Basically this is a quadruple alphabet book - it goes through alphabetical lists of the foods Kitty doesn't like, the myriad of ways in which she was bad, the foods her owner bought to placate her, and the many reparations Kitty then made for her badness. The illustrations are charming (I especially like the little fang kitty develops when she becomes bad), and the need to use the whole alphabet results in a broader vocabulary than is found in most children's books. It is wonderful for reading aloud (especially when the boys provide Kitty's sounds effects, e.g. "hack, hack!"), and the opportunities to point out someone else's outrageously bad behavior are very welcome to my pair of naughty small fry. I think this book could be enjoyed by kids of almost any age, as with "The Stinky Cheese Man," which I started to read to my eldest at age 2; kids can enjoy quite sophisticated humor given a little background information, and they really like being "in" on jokes and sharing knowing smiles. My 6-year-old is a beginning reader and can use it to sharpen his decoding skills while laughing out loud. The only reservation I have is that it does present as "yucky" several of the foods I try to feed my family... Still, I am adding it to my shopping cart today; as noted by other readers, it is a charming gift, and I really should pass one on to my brothers (for their kids, yeah, that's the ticket)...

This is one of the books you know that your child will cherish for a long time. I bought our copy on a whim through a school program for my three year old. When first glancing at it I thought, wow, this might be too involved for him. I decided to give it a try, thinking if he didn't like it now, maybe he will in a year or two.
It goes through every letter of the alphabet a few times and with each cycle there is a new and very silly sentence and picture for every letter. My three year old enjoyed this so much, that even now approaching four it is still a nighttime favorite. It helped with memory, letter sounds and letter recognition. He loves showing off the book to family members and the fact that he can "read" it on his own. Because of the joy this book gives us and it's very practical use, I treasure it. There is so much value in learning through laughter!

The best picture story book ever,

Do you want to laugh out loud? I can imagine sneaking in and reading this book to myself just to do so...except I would have to do it in an empty home or I would frighten people with my stomache aching laughter.
I love the character and the storyline - in addition the sophistication of the vocabulary is refreshing when considering other "learning your alphabet" books. I totally recommend Nick Bruel for yourself and your children and friends. You will be equally amazed and pleased by the original artwork as well.

A Big Hit,
By L. Varon (California) - See all my reviews

My 4-year-old loves this book. We bought the paperback version through the Scholastic book fliers he brings home from preschool. It's a funny ABC book that's fun to read, especially if you let the kid act out the sound effects for kitty's reactions and read the dialog in a silly voice. Cat owners will appreciate kitty's moods. We gave this book to a 2-year-old friend this Christmas, and it was well received.
Plot synopsis: Owner runs out of kitty's food: ABC of healthy alternatives. Kitty gets upset: ABC of kitty's revenge. Owner goes shopping: ABC of kitty's favorite foods. Kitty is pleased: ABC of kitty's gratitude.

My five year old daughter is just starting to read and we read a lot of picture books in our house. We found Bad Kitty at just the right time. It was an instant favorite and soon after we brought it home she was reciting the book from memory, using the pictures and letters as cues. In 10 years we will probably look back at this book as the one that helped her learn to read more than any other.
The pictures are great, the comic timing is impeccable and the rhythm is lyrical. Adults even get a kick out of it - I've shown it to all our friends and family. We've read all the Bad Kitty books Bruel has put out so far and they are all good, but this one is one of the best picture books we've ever read.

If you're into cats and humor I would recomment Bad Kitty as the book for you. Bad Kitty is utterly charming as she wreaks havoc throughout the alphabet, and then makes is right again from A-Z. The artwork is extremely funny, and the text is very clever. It's a book that will appeal to adults and children alike, especially if you love cats!!!

Bad Kitty is a wonderful book full of great illustrations and wonderful vocabulary building text. This is such a fun book for adults to read, and the kids love it too! I can't help but laugh at the hilarious pictures, and my kids can't quit giggling as we read it. This book is a must for anyone who lives with a "bad kitty", as we do. But it is a must for everyone else too. Nick Bruel has done a wonderful job with this book. We will be waiting impatiently to see what he does next.

It tickles me to the core and I can't think of any other book I've ever read/listened to/heard of, that is anywhere near as obnoxiously funny and fun to read, as this one is, for it's age group!!! PLEASE GET THIS ONE!! Thanks sooooo much Nick and keep up the great work!!!! I just love it!!! :-) Smile/grin/cheese etc!! tyvm, Crystal

My 6 yr.old son got hooked on Bad Kitty with the chapter book "Bad Kitty Gets a Bath". This is not a chapter book, but it is very cute and contains the same type of humor. The author goes through the alphabet 3 different times in 3 different funny ways in the book, which would be great for those who are still learning their letters/letter sounds. The illustrations are great and the whole thing is very funny! My son LOVES Bad Kitty and will soon be getting "Happy Birthday Bad Kitty!"
