Biography

Not to be confused with R. H. Burnside, stage director.

R. L. Burnside (November 23, 1926 – September 1, 2005), born Robert Lee Burnside, was a North Mississippi hill country blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist who lived much of his life in and around Holly Springs, Mississippi. Editorial Reviews

From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD

Raw contemporary Mississippi blues from this electric family- based unit, with far too many covers of the bandstand variety (including an odious "Outskirts of Town"). Guitarist Burn- side's lusty vocals are generally convincing, though. (B.D.) -- © Frank John Hadley 1993

This review is from: Bad Luck City (Audio CD)
This album was the first album released by Fat Possum Records. It is out of print. I recently found a copy of it here from one of Amazon's individual sellers---Blues Source in Thousand Oaks, CA. I thought I'd give some info about the album for Burnside fans. It's not what you're used to hearing from R.L. or the Sound Machine. It features Duwayne Burnside on lead guitar. He plays real good, but in a style more typified by Texas and Chicago players. He's raw like his dad, but he wants to play that straight ahead blues. I give this album 4 stars simply because I like the ingredients, if not so much the final product. The album also features Joseph Burnside on guitar and Calvin Jackson (Cedric Burnside's father, I believe) on drums. Produced by Matt Johnson, live at Syd's in Oxford, MS. Album dedicated to the memory of Johnny Woods (see www.swingmasterrecords.com) and Cotton Howell. Here's a list of the tracks on this album:

1. Talking about the Ghetto
2. Bad Luck City/Friend of Mine
3. Shake for Me
4. Boogie Chillen (R.L. makes it sound like John Lee Hooker---really, and it's an instrumental. Excellent drums as well)
5. All She Do
6. Long Haired Doney/Poor Boy Long Way
7. Burnside's Blues
8. Crosscut Saw
9. Outskirts of Town
10. My Eyes Keep Me in Trouble
11. Look on Yonder's Wall
12. Jumper on the Line
13. No Place to Go
14. Bad Sign
15. Killing Floor
16. You Don't Love Me

There's something remarkably truthful in this album. You can hear R.L. tuning his guitar, talking, laughing, etc. There are a few screw-ups, too. I like it a lot.
