Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Set in the modern-day West and drawing on elements of wealth, lechery and homicide, this diverting debut is a who's-sleeping-with-whom whodunit of a thriller centering around a dead Wyoming newspaperman. After an ill-fated affair with a California judge, ex-police detective Lilly Bennett, 45, moves back to her hometown of Roundup, Wyo. Her cop instincts barely have time to rest; during a lavish soiree, someone takes a shotgun to Roundup Morning News owner Walter Butterfield. Was it his wife? One of her lovers? Walter's mistress, a transsexual rodeo rider? Or one of his daughters, drug-addict Christine or aspiring publisher Ellen? Lilly hated Walter, but she can't resist a case and is appointed a U.S. marshall to aid in legal surveillance of the Butterfield ranch. Amid interrogations and investigations, Lilly always holds herself in high regard ("I dressed with particular care in my old 'Reagan Red' Chanel suit.... I had put myself together quite superbly"). Kellogg, who controls the tale's raciness by merely alluding to sex nonstop, moves her mystery along smartly, all the way to the final unmask-the-villain cocktail party. Kellogg effectively characterizes the West's rugged beauty along with the equally impressive, writ-large cast members.

From Library Journal

Lilly Bennett quits her California job as chief of detectives, returns to the family ranch in Roundup, Wyoming, and opens a security business. Buoyantly untarnished by her previous work, she enthusiastically investigates the murder of a hateful old man who pushed one daughter off the family foundation's board, kept the other in nose candy, and gave his affection to a rodeo mistress. In her return to the "Old West," Bennett becomes a U.S. marshall, unearths family peccadilloes, dates a real cowboy, and generally has a ball-not bad for 45. A humorous, rambunctious, and lively debut.

4.0 out of 5 stars A heroine with potential, September 4, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Bad Manners (Hardcover)
There are already several sequels to this first mystery by Kellogg, but I was attracted by the setting and thought I would start at the beginning. It was fun to read with a clever and funny older main character and I'm looking forward to the others in the series.

2.0 out of 5 stars I had to force myself to finish it, February 16, 2006

This review is from: Bad Manners (Lilly Bennett Mysteries) (Hardcover)
I just discovered Ms. Kellogg a few weeks ago when I purchased her more recent book calle Brilliant. I loved it, what clever and witty writing. I read the sequel to Brilliant call Precious and it was good but not as great as Brilliant. I decided to read the first book this author wrote and work myself to the most recent.

I am glad this isn't the first book I read that was written by this author. It was rather dull and it had a bit of Harlequin romance thing going on being on a ranch and all. The protagonist is also a bit catty when describing other female characters in the book and overly descriptive about body, face, hair and skin flaws to the point of it being irritating. Sort of like sitting next to someone who criticizes one person after another without stopping. The main characters old friend, for lack of better term, has let herself go. Her skin is bad, her hair is terrible and her lipstick is never on or half way on. Okay we got it, no need to beat this to death in so many pages. Meow.

Well, I am happy to tell anyone who read this book and had to put it down and away after the first few chapters, she improves a great deal as a writer in her more recent novels.
