4.0 out of 5 stars Wow!...
I've been a big fan of Meredith Brooks since day one, so when I heard that this new CD had been released, I ran right out and bought it. The first couple of songs had me rather annoyed and thinking that the album's title was an apt one... but by the time "Pleasure" (song #4) kicks in with its delightfully infectious melody, there's no turning back. 1.0 out of 5 stars The title describes this cd - bad bad one
It's bad and I don't mean bad in a good way. There is nothing good to say about this cd. Don't waste your money. Some of the songs are embarrassing to listen to "Crazy" for one. I think she should drop the pop, hip/hop, gotta get a hit mentality, go back and listen to Blurring the edges and maybe she might get back on track on the next record.

Meredith delivers one strikingly beautiful tune after another until the album ends with the gorgeous, emotional "Stand" and makes you hit PLAY on your CD player to listen to it all over again! I've listened to the whole CD three times already today and it gets better each and every time. "You Don't Know Me" and "Where Lovers Meet" are two of the most well-structured, melodic, and memorable pieces of music that have been released in recent memory. Through and through, this album contains the best musicianship we've yet heard from Meredith, and also captures every bit of her characteristic optimism and positive human qualities... and it does it even more wholeheartedly and introspectively than either of her first two albums. There's a lot of passion, happiness, and love in these songs, and it all comes out soaringly. Thank you, Meredith, for what I truly believe is your best album yet!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Bold Step For Our Ms Brooks..., August 23, 2002

"Blurring The Edges" had kind of an "edge" to it and Meredith got our attention with her first big hit, (you know the one), and "Deconstruction" showed us not so much a soft side as much as an honest one, and I was impressed. The music was tight and energetic. On "Bad Bad One", she gets right to the point of her feelings through her writing, and the song titles tell alot. You know what the songs are going to be about and sometimes even how they will feel, because Meredith hides nothing. I respect her more as a songwriter here and now because she can express herself without using vulgarity in her descriptions or language, and we can still relate (even if I am a guy). I have listened to this only twice and I know the above "4" will probably go up to a "5". My only-only thing is that I would like for her to reach out to me-us-her friends and let us party with her on a couple of tracks. Of course, without getting "High". Otherwise, I give Meredith a lot of credit, and thank her for her album.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best rock albums of the year, June 10, 2002

Wow ! I was kinda surprised to notice her new album was out, since I didn't even know she saw still in the business music -I don't listen to radio much. Well..this is an excellent album ! I'm suprised Amazon editors didn't criticize it yet. Every single song is worth it, nice melodies, great guitars, lyrics, it's obviously her best album. Her style is unique, and pretty good, it's less 'poppy' than Alanis latest stuff, more rock'n'roll than Sheryl, somewhat floating between Pretenders mixed w/ Fiona Apple & rock guitars, and she absolutly deserves a nice position in the female rock universe. Go listen to mp3s, then buy the album, like every music fan should do.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rock album for grown-ups., July 5, 2006

"Bad, Bad One", is the original and I think the better version of the album "Shine"
This album is filled with thoughtful, well written songs of love and pain that make up the lives of adults. Maybe that is the reason that this album has not done better financially, as music sales and radio always seem to be geared toward the teen market. I, for one, love this album, I have bought several copies myself and given them to friends going through different emotional issues as a form of therapy for them. It has one of the most romantic songs ever to me in the song "Stand", what we really want from those we love.
So...if you would like a great album for grown up issues, and if you don't have "Shine" already, get yourself a copy of "Bad, Bad One" and enjoy.

Meredith is back with a sleek new sound. The tracks are great and lyrics that one can relate too. Hopefully people will take note of this great talent - writes, produces, sings ans is one of the best female guitar players in the world.

4.0 out of 5 stars A repeat listener, June 13, 2002

This is one of those gems that you can keep playing over and over on a long day, without getting bored with it. The rich tones of "Where lovers Meet," the playful surprise! style in "you don't know me," the clever chords in "Pleasure"-- it's all here, the CD doesn't disappoint. Brooks shows herself to be talented both technically and lyrically, a sign of a maturing artist. Some of the tracks don't quite have the flavor of "Blurring the Edges," but that's why you need to get them both to compare!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a story!!, May 25, 2002

Heard through the grapevine that this was a great record...and IT IS!! One of the reasons is that it's one of those records that tells a cohesive, meaningful story from one song to the next. Meredith's guitar-playing is awesome (as usual). From "Shine" to "Crazy" to "Pleasure" to "You Don't Know Me", singles abound on this disk. Will be a whole summerful of fun ...

ENJOY!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the wait, August 12, 2002

All original material and a renewed focus on her talent are what this diva has offered up this time around. Not succumbing to the Britney and Whitney-ism of the pop music world, Meredith has reached deep into her personality and experience to create a spectrum that while wide-ranging is definitely "rock" solid. Not a big rock fan myself, I find myself singing/humming the songs on a regular basis. "Where Lovers Meet" while phenomenal on its own, would be fine inspiration for Chris Cox or any other remix guru out there...could be a big club hit with an extra bass track and heightened tempo. "Pain," "Shine," and "Bad Bad One" are definitely other hits to watch the charts for. Hold this one up against Sheryl Crow's C'Mon C'Mon and Shelby Lynne--Ms. Brooks would give them good company.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bad Bad One is a Good Good One, May 22, 2002

Having been a fan of Meredith Brooks since the heady days of Blurring The Edges (before actually, through a promo copy of same.) I was highly anticipating this disc with a sense of desire. A desire to hear 'the voice' again.

What Meredith Brooks has to say, in my opinion, is of more importance than how she says it. Her words, voice, and emotion speak deeper than the sampled drums, and guitar overdubs. Tracks like "Crazy", "Shine", and "You Don't Know Me" would effect me just as deep if they were to be done in a different genre. Don't get me wrong, I'm a guitar guy. Love the guitars... and she plays nearly all of them herself.

Meredith Brooks has a wonderful way of creating a hook, and every song here has a wonderful hook. Making them instantly memorable, and singable.

This record is 'brighter' than Deconstruction was, more of a summertime feel to the sounds. It's good to have Meredith back and active. It's been a long time coming, and she comes back with a splash!

5.0 out of 5 stars Meredith Tidal Waves, May 29, 2002

Meredith is finally back. She was on my list of "what happened" people. Her release was an accidental find. I listen to all sorts of music, and I have a soft spot for people like Meredith. No one really gives her the credit due. I am a guitarist, and I appreciate a class act, regardless of genre. This cd is her best release yet. The songs have perfect texture to them. Her skills on the disc are shown the textures of her voice and guitars. It has far more musical depth than I thought pop genre cd could. If you were even remotely interested in her previous efforts, you won't be let down. If you have never heard of her, and want something that is lighter on the ears, without sacrificing quality, than this cd is for you. Meredith may be a Brooks, but this disc felt like a Tidal Wave when I put it on. She has a lot of talent and I am glad she isn't writing jingles for soap detergents or something like that, because she revives my faith in the lighter side of music.
