The fifth in the Bev Morriss series finds the Birmingham detective sergeant a bit distracted. Someone is killing people suspected of being pedophiles; the evidence seems to point to antagonistic crime reporter Matt Snow, but, much as she dislikes the man, Bev can’t bring herself to suspect him of murder. There’s also the matter of a physician’s suicide that appears to have wide-ranging consequences; it’s a mystery that requires Bev’s razor-sharp intellect, but a major development in her personal life prevents her from completely focusing on the matters at hand. Readers have come to know Morriss as a strong, outspoken, and often abrasive investigator. Here Carter penetrates beneath the detective's tough exterior to reveal some of her inner fears and self-doubts. This may not be the best novel in Carter’s consistently strong hard-boiled series, but it definitely shows us another side of the hero and encourages us to connect with her on a deeper personal level than ever before. --David Pitt
