Bad Secrets Equals Good Music, November 28, 2010
This review is from: Bad Secrets [Vinyl] (Vinyl)
I picked up this 9" with accompanying CD from Young Widows at a show they played with Red Sparowes and Russian Circles. I wasn't sure what to expect from the collaboration of Evan Patterson and Dan Davis, but I did have a hunch that the music would contain a fair deal of experimentation and weirdness. My hunch hit the mark dead on.
Bad Secrets contains 7 songs that sound like they were recorded on a really nice cell phone. Distorted guitars, crashing drums, reverby basslines and echoey vocals that are veiled in fog and smoke comprise the tracks found herein. They are all different sounding; "In The Woods" contains a fair bit of noisiness, while "Gimme Sound" has a more traditional rock sound. The opening song "Lay Down" has a guitar riff that is sure to cloak a room in psychedelic good vibes.
Overall, this 9" is worth its cost. I'd recommend it to fans of Jimi Hendrix and Blue Cheer, as well as to people who enjoy the post-rock sound of Isis and City of Ships. It plays at 33 RPM, which I discovered through trial and error. The CD that comes with the vinyl is useful for getting the music on your iPod too. Buy this.
