I agree there's no price to be fly but I can't be fly with ugly feet."—Total Life Prosperity Blog

5.0 out of 5 stars Sole Searching with Tanenbaum June 7, 2010
Format:Paperback
Tanenbaum's book on Bad Shoes asks us to question the choices we make in footwear. Her research is extensive: she explores everything from the history of the high-heel to the anatomical structure of the foot; to the psychology behind foot fetishes to the (albeit painful) effects that patriarchal society has on our feet. She even includes a practical and funny "Shoes Wisely" shopping guide at the end of the book. Tanenbaum's not merely asking us to toss our two sizes too small stilettos, but inviting us to investigate why so many women choose health-afflicting shoes in the first place. Smart, witty, and stylish, Tanenbaum's latest is a must-read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Smart Read! June 7, 2010
Format:Paperback
Any women interested in both fashion and comfort should pick up Tanenbaum's book on Bad Shoes. There are not enough books out there on the choice many women make everyday - between sex appeal, attractiveness and comfort, health. And Tanenbaum explores the implications of wearing heels with a critical eye but avoids preaching because she identifies with the motivations for wearing "high, high heels." Best of all, her pace is quick and witty like a fashion magazine. It's not easy to make a book about shoes sound smart. But the message of Tanenbaum's Bad Shoes - for women to prioritize their well-being over all else - is. It feels like good advice coming from a friend that's done the research and knows the history.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Lowdown on the High Heel June 6, 2010
Format:Paperback
Blinded by culture, many of us behave like hypocrites: responding to bound feet with horror but envious of women who can walk around in the highest heels. Since I stopped wearing high heels years ago in the interest of pain-free walking, I thought the price of comfort would be appearing eccentric. Now, reading Leora Tannenbaum's savvy and informative BAD SHOES, I see I was just being smart. In breezy, witty prose, citing medical, historical, mythological, and pop cultural sources of our knowledge of feet and footwear, she lays out all the pitfalls of willingly wearing bad shoes. Helpful sister that she is, she also offers sensible suggestions for saving our feet without sacrificing fashion. Brava to Tannenbaum for extending good sense all the way down to our toes.
