This is a mean ripping blues rock cd. I am floored. I have some of his older stuff, and some promotional stuff, and I hadn't listened to it in ages. It was ok. 3.0 out of 5 stars Great Guitar, Terrible Vocals
First of all, I am not a big follower of Moore, although I have always respected his guitar work, some more than others. I prefer his bluesier efforts in general. Having said that, I simply cannot handle his abysmal vocals. Unlike an earlier reviewer I very much think he needs a session vocalist or to limit himself to instrumental albums. A shame, because he is a fine...

5.0 out of 5 stars Appreciate What We Have When We Do, October 9, 2008
This review is from: Bad for You Baby (Audio CD)
This is a mean ripping blues rock cd. I am floored. I have some of his older stuff, and some promotional stuff, and I hadn't listened to it in ages. It was ok. More widdly widdly guitar than I'd like. Then I caught his performance DVD of the Fender Stratocaster 50th Anniversary performance of Hendrix's Red House. That knock-out ripping mean blues guitar playing inspired me to pick up the CD. I am so glad I did.

There is something for everyone on here. At the risk of comparing his mastery to other guitar greats, this guitar hits me right between the eyes. You hear the BEST blues band and blues guitar playing, the BEST rock band and rock guitar playing. This CD IS A MUST HAVE for any fan of blues and/or rock. This CD, on songs such as "Bad for You Baby", "Down the Line", and "Did you Ever Feel Lonely?" pay homage to his roots, while a tune like "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know" is like Moore's long, bending, British soulful bending best. I've noticed this track is not available via download. Here's a tip: This track makes the album.

This album is an Opus, and should be listened to in it's entirety. Moore's guitar work reminds me that we should be thankful for what we have when we do. I've spent a long time pining after SRV's guitar work, and Danny Gatton's excellent playing. While there is a place for them, we MUST acknowledge Moore's guitar genius. It is alive and well, and speaks volumes of the power of blues and rock. He is one with the guitar. You simply can't live without this CD. It is tasteful, soulful, and bluesy. A great selection of tunes, as well, that expose different tasty elements of playing.

buy it. buy it now, and support this musical gift of a guitarist.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gary's last album was a great sendoff!, October 13, 2008

This review is from: Bad for You Baby (Audio CD)
No one expected the last album Gary Moore released was going to top "Still Got The Blues" or "Blues Alive," but this one comes the closest. Ever since Gary did the Peter Green tribute album, it seemed like he was stuck in a rut. He dabbled in electronic, dance, pop, and light rock. But until "Bad For You Baby," I didn't hear that great Les Paul sound he is known for. Now, all of the songs aren't excellent, but I would say about 75% of the CD is above average. The song "Bad For You Baby" is a great opener in the classic blues style. "Down The Line" is a more country-blues oriented track which has a similar beat and rhythmic pattern to the song "Heading Home Again," off Skid Row's S/T album in 1970. Nevertheless, it is a great song. "Umbrella Man" is a truly original piece of music with great solos. "Holding On" is a slower song but I really enjoyed it, as it was a good spot to slow things down on the CD. "Walkin' Thru The Park" is a basic blues song and is not one of my favorites on this CD. "I Love You More..." is probably the masterpiece of this CD. It is a 10 minute journey of emotion for the first five minutes, and spine tingling guitar work for the last five minutes. It is a SUPERB song! "Mojo Boogie" is a good song that follows and it fits here perfectly. "Someday Baby" is still taking time to grow on me, again not one of my favorites. "Did You Ever Feel Lonely?" is a great soulful blues number with plenty of excellent guitar work. "Preacher Man Blues" is probably my least favorite song on this CD. The last song, "Trouble Ain't Far Behind," is interesting because although it is a good song, it seems strikingly similar to Gary's version of Duster Bennett's "Jumpin' At Shadows." I noticed at least two or three parts where the same pattern of notes was played, especially at the end. But other than that, it is a decent way to close out this CD. Overall, Gary's voice is suited well for these blues songs. He gets a lot of heat because he is not the best vocalist in the world, but hey, his guitar does most of the talking. With the way Gary plays, he only needs to be an average vocalist. There is no need for a session vocalist or anything like that. Gary's voice makes this album his own. Besides, most of the time he is playing his guitar, not singing. I enjoyed eight out of eleven songs on this CD, which is the highest percentage of tracks that I liked since his "Blues For Greeny" CD. Gary will always be remembered for a shredder, but also his excellent interpretation of blues.

This is the best Gary Moore in a while. "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know" is alone worth the price of the CD, especially since you can't download it. You might want to listen to the original of this song by Al Kooper. The first recording is on Blood Sweat and Tears album "Child Is The Father To Man" An even better version is on Al Kooper's "Soul Of A Man", which is probably my favorite album ever (based on the number of times I have played it and still do).

Also good is "Mojo Boogie", "Some Day Baby" and "Down The Line" and the solo in "Did You Ever Feel Lonely" is killer blues.

If you are a Gary Moore fan I recommend "Best Of The Blues" and especially "The Thrill Is Gone" with BB King himself. To really enjoy this song, listen to it first then go to YouTube and watch the video of Gary and BB playing it, then go back to the song and listen to it again. You will hear whole new layers of two guitar masters paying homage to each other.

Ive been a fan of Gary for quite sometime and have all his albums. This is another great addition to his catalog. Gary is probably at least in the U.S. the most underated guitarist there is. For anyone who hasn't taken the chance to give Gary Moore a listen, this cd would be great start. But I would recommend almost anything He's done.

Excellent new release from one of the masters of the electric guitar.

Consistently good songwriting and some of the hippest, hottest blues fretwork you'll likely hear from any corner of the world- muscular, killer tone(s) and cuts like a knife.

if you like GM, worth every penny. Highly recommended-

5.0 out of 5 stars RICK ""SHAQ" GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "DON'T "FRET" IT'S *MOORE* BLUES!", November 15, 2008

This CD showcases the full multi-dimensional talents of Gary Moore. Some artists have smooth silky voices... other artists have gruff-growling voices ideal for bearing your soul through the blues. Some guitar players bend the strings heavily... while others make their guitar sound like an orchestral instrument... Gary demonstrates his ability to provide all this and more to his audience all on this single release. With songs ranging from the title song "BAD FOR YOU BABY" which is a foot-stomping tune that presents images of an "amp'd-up" electrified Elvis... to "DOWN THE LINE" which can almost conjure up a similar image of Johnny Cash... to "MOJO BOOGIE" which is an absolute roadhouse- blues-boogie blast that would make ZZ Top envious. Mix in some guitar licks that are reminiscent of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Albert King... and you know this CD is GOLD!

If you have ever been able to describe the sound of a lonely-soulful-crying-wailing-sax... well believe it or not on one song..."I LOVE YOU MORE THAN YOU'LL EVER KNOW"... Gary makes his guitar cry like a wailing sax... and the listener is additionally blessed by the fact that this song is TEN-MINUTES-AND-THIRTY-FOUR-SECONDS LONG. Along with your listening pleasure... you get your moneys worth as this CD has eleven songs with a playing time of fifty-five-minutes-and-thirty-three seconds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gary Proves He's Still A Monster Player (we knew it all along), October 11, 2008
This review is from: Bad for You Baby (Audio CD)
I just bought this latest release from Gary Moore and I'm super happy with it. Like other reviewers here have pointed out there is something for every type of Blues fan. But what I really like about "Bad For You Baby" is the fact that Gary is still reaching for new sources of inspiration. Check "Down The Line" - almost hot rod country style picking (actually I think of Shaver's "Georgia on a Fast Train" here. Yes,I miss Eddy Shaver. Maybe Gary does too). That bend Gary does for the end of second solo at the V (2:09) smokes.

Another nice aspect of this CD is it almost reminds me of a Side 1/Side 2 paceing with "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know" being the break - Side 1, Teles/single coils. Side 2, Pauls/humbuckers, both used for maximum effect, though upon further review, the wallop of those oblique bends that kick off the solo for the opening-title track's gotta be 'buckers. I read in Guitar Player when Gary was promoting Close as You Get that he had kind of rediscovered Telecasters (thats the axe on 30 Days, among others). He mentioned that was the first quality guitar he owned as a kid, a '67 I think. I also read he had used them for rhythm (Movin'On from Still Got the Blues), but not much for lead work.

Did You Ever Feel Lonely recalls a Stormy Moday type feel and Trouble Ain't Far Behind reminds me of Need Your Love So Bad but to me it's fine. Gary Moore is one of those of those cats that can almost do no wrong (though Scars was pushing it a bit).

I've been a fan of Gary's since I bought Thin Lizzy's "Black Rose" in '79 (Toughest Street In Town was a sincere WTH moment) and only saw him live once (Wild Frontier tour) but his career is a thing to truly appreciate. To see this guy is still this good is mind-boggleing and beautiful. Take care,Gary.

(sorry to add we lost him Feb. 6, 2011...RIP Gary,,,loved the show in '87, wish i'd seen him again)

5.0 out of 5 stars Gary Moore's Best, April 16, 2011

Favorites are a matter of personal preference.
I love Gary Moore's blues music and this is my favorite Gary Moore cd. It was also his last album before he passed away.

Here are some short personal impressions of my favorite songs on this cd:

The title track is a blues serenade with a plodding rhythm that launches into screaming lead licks with string bending galore and "nasty" distortion. It may be the best song on a very strong cd!

"Down The Line" is what happens when country, blues, and rock collide. A tale of lost love "fading down the line", a common subject in country music. The bass line sounds like country accented by scorching lead guitar licks with a little distortion mixed in.

"Holding On" is a slow paced, wishful ballad with an organ backing up a sweet blues lead that I have come to expect in Gary Moore's blues style ballads. He never disappoints if you love that style of blues! "Trouble Ain't Far Behind" is the same type of song. Moore displays a knack for playing just enough notes and carrying the song with a voice that is vastly under-rated until he sneaks in a fantastic, tasteful lead to end the song.

"I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know" is a mournful, slow-paced ballad with a wailing blues lead. Something that Gary Moore did better than most blues artists.

"Someday Baby" is a blues song with amazing lead blues guitar! From the "old school" style of quivering string bending that is reminiscent of legends like B.B. King to a screaming, low-neck pitch that grabs your attention for it's versatility in sound, this is another blues treasure.

"Did You Ever Feel Lonely?" puts me in mind of what the blues is all about. Heartbreak, pain and sorrow over a lost love.
And all of the emotion seeps through in the lyrics and Moore's guitar. This is what I call an "old school" blues song written by Gary Moore that you would expect to hear from a by-gone era of blues founders!

If you like the electric blues and the "old school" sound from the past you should check this cd out!
Moore had the ability to mix various genres and influences into his style of blues and his talent on guitar puts him over the top in my book.
While I sketched a handful of the songs, they are all excellent songs. There isn't a "filler" to be found on this cd.
I highly recommend "Bad For You Baby."
