Badass Book!,
By M.J. Herman (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Badass: A Hard-Earned Guide to Living Life with Style and (the Right) Attitude (Hardcover)
I was a fan of Shannen in the 90s and thought it'd be cool to read what she has to say about her experience at that time. The book is pleasant to read. She mostly acknowledges her past mistakes and advises integrity, honesty, and self-confidence; the badass way. She explains she never was a bitch as she never intended to hurt anyone. The book is good, very entertaining, and has lots and lots of great pictures. She has a great sense of humor. I recommend it if you like her and/or want to read about things you might have experienced yourself. Also, I went to her book signing in New York. I wanted to meet her in person. She is the sweetest celebrity I've ever met. She was very friendly and talked to all of us for quite a long time. She also took pictures with everyone. That proves how nice and genuine she is. Way to go, Shannen!

The art of being badass...,
By Amanda (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Badass: A Hard-Earned Guide to Living Life with Style and (the Right) Attitude (Hardcover)
** I'll start with a friendly warning; BADASS is NOT an autobiography, it is clearly marketed towards personal growth and self help **
Reformed bad-girl actress Shannen Doherty has manged to turn her life (and potentially career destroying ways) around and she has just published a book to help others face up to their problems and how to come through.the other side stronger. I've never bought (or even read) a self help book before, and I only bought BADASS because Shannen Doherty wrote it, so I had no idea what to expect. BADASS is a lifestyle guide that is spilt into three clear sections: BADASS BASIC TRAINING What is a badass, why you should want to be one and a simple guide on how to become one and live your life to it's full potential. THE BADASS ART OF LOVE AND WAR Once you've know how to improve yourself, it's time to learn how to apply your new and improved outlook with family, friends colleagues and partner. LIVING THE BADASS LIFESTYLE Now you've changed your outlook and attitude accordingly - and have also changed the way that you interact with the people around you - you need to think about your surroundings and the things you do too. Part one starts with Shannen clarifying what the term badass means to her: Living your life with integrity, honesty, and self-confidence. Once we know and understand what our goal is Shannen advises us how to stop wasting time and opportunities people-pleasing and hiding away and becoming smart, honest, more confident and assertive - all while avoiding the trap of coming across as being bitchy. Section two is more in depth, especially the advise for intimate relationships. Some people may find some of the advice in section two old fashioned; For instance she asks how hard is it to shave your legs and underarms for your partner? Some people may be initially outraged, but think about it - would you like it if he/she always slobbed about and never made an effort for you? The advice for family, friends and work colleagues doesn't contain as much information and is fairly interchangeable. But what is included is easy to follow; Be respectful, don't sweat the little things and if you ever get drawn into an argument over something simply say "I'd like to research. Can I get back to you in a bit?" and walk away. She also gives advice on 'stalking' - as in spying on a partner you suspect of being unfaithful, which is something that I suspect other advice books don't advise doing. Shannen does point out that it's a little crazy, but why sit at home worrying with unanswered questions when you can easily find the answers? It does make her sound a little bit, umm, paranoid, but again I did find myself nodding along her her arguement. I guess I'm a bit paranoid too... Section three is varied and I can see myself coming back to it numerous times in the future. There's everything from lists of the best 'Badass gal' lipstick shades and nail polish shades, how to fake a French manicure in a matter of seconds, how to make a cover for a patio, decorating, hosting parties small or large, Shannen's favourite recipes, all the way to the best holiday destinations. OK, so BADASS doesn't contain any groundbreaking information or advice, but I like how practical and to-the-point Shannen is with the information and how she will provide examples from her own life to back-up how well the tips and guides worked for her. She doesn't come across as pretentious or patronising, simply friendly and intelligent. I love how Shannen has made the tips and stories personal; It feels like your chatting together over coffee as she does add general instances from her life and work to stop the advice from becoming a cold, clinical laundry list of what to and what not to do. Shannen has wrote the book as if she's talking to another woman, but there's nothing in here that can't be followed by a man - well, maybe the lipstick and French manicure tips can be skipped. As Shannen is a keen photographer and is the art directer for a Californian magazine [Pasadena magazine], so I was hoping that the book would be illustrated and have an attractive layout and I was pleased to be right. As well as professional portraits there are plenty of personal snaps of Shannen, her family and her close friends. In addition to that the blocks of text are broken up a bit with various check lists, inspirational quotes and do's and don'ts so you can make sure that you have taken the information in fully before moving on. The layout also makes the book easy to get back into if you have to put it down for a bit. Shannen talks frequently about how close she is to her family and how important they are to her. She talks a lot of how strong her father is and how inspiration he is and she also thanks several of his Doctors for saving his life, so I was greatly saddened to learn that he passed away a few weeks ago xx

I bought this book because there was a book signing in NYC. I didnt have any expectations at all. I'm reading the book and I think it's one of the best books I've ever read. She gives amazing advice from the heart and from her own experience. I'm going to buy several books and give them as gifts this Christmas. Everyone can benefit from this book, men & women. Bravo to Shannen!

I love Shannen Doherty but when I ordered this book I wasn't looking for a self-help; which is what I got. I've never read the word 'Badass' so many times before in my entire life. This book was 250 pages of nothing but redundancy.

Surprised at how Badass Shannen Is...,
This review is from: Badass: A Hard-Earned Guide to Living Life with Style and (the Right) Attitude (Hardcover)
I was initially skeptical about how badass Shannen really was, but was really impressed by her wisdom on the subject. She did a great job of defining the word itself so people could see that it was a huge compliment. She then gave great practical advice on how someone could become more badass. She talked about herself and experience, but focused on transferring her wisdom to the reader. Overall, very impressed. Jessica Kizorek, Founder, BadassBusinessWomen.org.

Where was this book when I was in my 20's?!!!,
This review is from: Badass: A Hard-Earned Guide to Living Life with Style and (the Right) Attitude (Hardcover)
I thought it was cleverly written and when my niece is old enough, this will be a gift to her before she goes to college to learn how to accept yourself and be honest to who you are without being negative. It was a quick read, great pictures, and from the heart. I enjoyed every page!

This was such a wonderful book. Helpful and entertaining. Loaded with great common sense advice. This book helped me to see all the mistakes I had been making and gave me some insight as to why I keep making those same mistakes. Shannon is honest about why it took her so long to truly embrace her inner badass and teaches you how to embrace your own badass self. This book is fun, entertaining and really very helpful. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be a stronger better person. Even if you don't like Shannon, give this book a chance. It is well worth the money and may well get you to change your mind about this beautiful badass woman.

I have always been a fan of Doherty, she is the very reason that I own "Beverly Hills 90210", & she is the same age as me, I admit I bought this book for the cover photo & any other pictures of her, but I have to admit that I found the book pretty interesting, she talks about how she doesn't care for bios personally, so I knew this wouldn't be one, & she says that in the first few pages, so you won't waste your time, however she does discuss how the success of "90210" affected her & how the show's popularity put unusual stress on her givin the fact that her father was having a series of health problems during her run on the show, & the fact that she recently lost her father awhile back, I had no trouble believing this part of it, she also talks briefly about her marriage to Rick Soloman(Paris Hilton sex tape), but for the most part she says very little about her other show "Charmed", one thing she does not do is diss her co-stars from both shows, which I thought was nice on her part seeing that some of her past co-stars have dissed her, however while reading this book I can say that Shannen is definately a confident woman & makes no apologies about who she is, she also admits her past mistakes even though she doesn't go into details, she also understands a man's needs in & out of the bedroom which made me an even bigger fan of her
& does bash women who are selfish & only think of themselves, now one could argue that she is that way, but I didn't get that impression, she seems happy & content with life, & isn't that what we all want anyway, I have always felt she was a bit misunderstood, & this book proves it, she does use the term "badass" a little too much, but I had to chuckle at the fact that her using this word was probably to aggrevate her critics, the last part of the book really details how to be a good host for party functions & has several food recipes, overall this is for Shannen fans only, if you are a fan, I say get it, if you are not, don't bother.

Made no sense,
This review is from: Badass: A Hard-Earned Guide to Living Life with Style and (the Right) Attitude (Hardcover)
The layout is very confusing -the book goes from Shannen's "tips" to lists to photos. I don't think anyone really wants to take "tips" from someone who seems to keep getting fired from almost every job she has ever had (whether it was really her fault or not). There was no coherent layout. Usually books (even if they are not autobiographies) have the main storyline, then photos around the middle of the book, then more of the story. The lists look like they were written by a stalker (like the movie The Bodyguard).
I can appreciate that she didn't want to write an autobiography but I hope that she does someday! I would like to hear her side of the story...
