Cowardice and Courage,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Red Badge of Courage, The Open Boat and Other Stories (Kindle Edition)
Stephen Crane's classic story of cowardice and courage. What transforms him from a soldier who faced the charging Confederates and ran to a soldier who returns to the front and does heroic deeds? It strikes me that Frank Loesser's WW II infantry song "The Ballad of Roger Young" holds the key. Roger Young was the very young (no pun intended) soldier from small town Ohio who gave his life in the Pacific jungle to save the lives of his fellow soldiers and justly earned the Congressional Medal of Honor. The song tells it, "Shines the name, Roger Young, fought and died for the men he marched among." Not for country; not for freedom; but for the men he marched among. And the same is true for Stephen Crane's young soldier who returns to the front not to save the union but to be shoulder to shoulder with the other men in his unit whom he has grown to love and will no longer abandon.
