Book Description

0786417293 978-0786417292 February 2004
The slave-hire system of Charleston, South Carolina, in the 1700s and the 1800s produced a curious object—the slave badge. The badges were intended to legislate the practice of hiring a slave from one master to another, and slaves were required by law to wear them. Slave badges have become quite collectible and have excited both scholarly and popular interest in recent years.

This work documents how the slave-hire system in Charleston came about, how it worked, who was in charge of it, and who enforced the laws regarding slave badges. Numerous badge makers are identified, and photographs of badges, with commentary on what the data stamped on them mean, are included. The authors located income and expense statements for Charleston from 1783 to 1865, and deduced how many slaves were hired out in the city every year from 1800 on. The work also discusses forgeries of slave badges, now quite common.

5.0 out of 5 stars all you ever wanted to know about slave badges, May 5, 2004

This review is from: Slave Badges and the Slave-Hire System in Charleston, South Carolina, 1783-1865 (Hardcover)
this is the ultimate scholarly work on slave badges, a unique product of our slaveholding past. The book is thorough and easy to read. In it, you will find everything you could possibly want to know about badges and their uses.

I recommend it for Civil War buffs who want to add some marginalia to their discussions and to historical writers who want to add detail to their work. Anyone visiting historic Charleston will also find the information about fraudulent badges essential to their souvenir shopping. Plus, you may decide to bring your metal detector into the city from the beach, because that's how these valuable artifacts are usually found.

The perfect combination of history, statistics, analysis and photographic material. This is the only resource you will need to understand the badge system and to learn to distinguish the surviving relics from modern forgeries. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars In depth study of Slave Badges, September 16, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book delves into the true history of slave badges. The authors research uncovers and reveals the numbers of slave badges made in each year, who made the badges, the types of badges, what each year of badge looked like as to what an authentic badge should have on it for each year, what the badges were made from, why the badges were made and used, how they were used, etc. There are many color plates showing the badges, and designs. Some of the photos of badges are a bit small, but other than that, I had no complaints about the book...it is the seminal work on slave badges of Charleston.
