5.0 out of 5 stars TRULY A CAPTIVATING STORY, August 5, 2004

M. Hartmann "abayyan" (Milan, Michigan United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Badlands Bride (Harlequin Historical, No 327) (Mass Market Paperback)
Hallie Wainwright was upset, as a lot of women of her era, that wanted recognition for their brains and abilities. She did not want to be valued for her marriagability and femeninity.
She wanted to be considered equal - not realizing the dangers she has been protected from.
When she decided to go west [again to prove her ability to her father and brothers] she had to go under the protection of Cooper DeWitt. Neither wanting marriage at first.

She was surprised and astounded, at first, when she realized that Cooper had been raised by the Sioux. Hallie was dismayed when she heard of the custom of taking a dead brother's wife as his own.
Then she met Last Horse who wanted to trade for her. Oh,boy!
Chumani, Cooper's brothers wife, and her son was under his protection. She taught Hallie many house-wifely, frontier methods of survival in her hut.
Then came the story of Hallie's stone - the meaning, use and belief were great.

Hallie gained a reputation for bloodying the outlaw's nose and shooting a bear - while she collected the stories of the mail-order brides and how they were surviving.
Cooper would not give in to the strong attraction he felt for this white woman, she could not survive in this wild country.
He was astounded at what she did survive while under his care.
He was going to see that she got back safely to Boston. Yup! Uh-ha!
Great love story -- definitely a keeper
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - worth reading again. No PMS until -----

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book, well written with engaging characters., July 27, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Badlands Bride (Harlequin Historical, No 327) (Mass Market Paperback)
Simply wonderful! The heroine, Hallie, is a spunky, honest young woman who (thinks) she knows what she wants, and isn't afraid to go after it. Cooper is sexy, hard-working, and a true gentleman. Their differences seem to be too much to overcome, but love truly conquers all, as Hallie and Cooper find out. Ms. St. John brings the setting alive, and her characters are always so well done that I truly feel as if I know them. The sexual tension is sizzling - I couldn't put this one down!

4.0 out of 5 stars "Could you love me?" he asked., December 15, 2011
For those of you who are familiar with Cheryl St. John's historicals, the heroes are both sweet yet are accustomed to some hurt. The heroines' jobs are to take that hurt away. BADLANDS BRIDE is no different and yet I enjoyed the story.

Hallie Wainwright is a woman on a mission. The youngest in a family of men she is determined to make her own name. Her father runs the local newspaper but doesn't take Hallie seriously as a reporter.

She has to prove herself and takes off with a group of mail-order brides that are headed for the Midwest. The plot thickens as she arrives on the stage and is held up with the others. She shows her toughness when things go south.

Cooper DeWitt lives and works in this rough country. Raised by the Sioux he is looking for a mail-order bride and thinks he has found her when he mistakes Hallie for someone else. Here is where the story glides along.

Hallie is not looking for a commitment. She wants that all-inspiring story that she can take home to win her father's favor. Unfortunately she'll have to wait for the next stage. In the meantime she figures out that life among these people can be rough at best. Sleeping quarters, food and cleanliness are no longer taken for granted. She becomes aware what it truly must be like for women (and men) to meet each other for the first time and try to make a life together.

The question becomes can Cooper win over Hallie? Is she his heroine? Finally, can she give up her past luxuries and learn to love him? For some reason this homespun romance drew me in. Take it for what it's worth; this is a somewhat silly Americana intrigue. As the reader you know some of the situations couldn't or wouldn't happen in real life but this story has both the elements of passion and enchantment. So cuddle up in a comfortable chair and prepare for a pleasant diversion with your quiet time.
