5.0 out of 5 stars BADLANDS LAW - SAGA OF THE CONOVERS #1, April 5, 2008

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Badlands Law (Harlequin Historical) (Paperback)
This story takes you into the Badlands of South Dakota, a rough, unforgiving place.

Deacon Conover is dead [1867] his daughter-in-law, Dorry grieving but is being propositioned by Junior Conover, he wants her.
She is convinced that her husband Gray is alive and in the Badlands.
She loads up her children, Gabriel, 10 - Yale, 9 and Kitty, 5 and heads out across the Badlands in search of her husband.

When the youngsters finally meet up with some people, it turns out to be Aaron Smiler, of Misery, South Dakota and he takes them to his ranch until they can find their father.

1885 in Misery, Gabe is now the Sheriff [28 years old] and he keeps the town and the law on the quiet side. He has a room provided by the towns people in the Red Dog Saloon.

That is where he runs into Billie Calley, being held hostage by Buck Reedy. Jack Slade, who owns the Saloon has hired Billie to sing [something she can't do] which leads to more interesting results. Gabe is intrigued by her and attracted to her against his will.

Billie seems to some how make friends with those around her, especially Grunt the cook whom she helps eventually.

Soon Slade hires another girl for the Saloon so that Billie can become a cook when Grunt gets ill. Grace Sawyer ends up as Billie's roommate and cries herself to sleep at night.
Billie gets her story and sends Lars Swensen, Gabe's sometimes deputy, off to get Grace's son and daughter, Ned and Nell.

The story unfolds the romance between Gabriel and Billie and teaches in the end how people must not judge others, especially by appearances.

Billie never tells Gabe why she has shown up in Misery or what she was running from. But her past does catch up with her and just about destroys Gabe.
Anyway you have to meet all the wonderful characters that make up Misery, South Dakota.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED --M - most enjoyable story -- why do all authors make it seem like all females are willing to hop into bed - and let their hormones rule. That is supposed to be all of the men's failings, they can't <g> control their hormones. Or is it lust they can't control?
