Apistophile bible,

This review is from: Baensch/Mergus Cichlid Atlas, Vol. 1 (Hardcover)
If you are into apistogrammas, you must buy this book!! The author has documented the most extensive research of these animals in print. Riddled with high quality photos, the broad spectrum of accepted species and many undescribed species at the time of printing are described in detail. South American Dwarf Cichlid natural history, ecological role, behavior, physiology are presented in great detail as well. Probably the most remarkable achievement of the author is his experimental result where he has discovered the dramatic effect temperature and pH have on the male/female sex ratio of a given brood of Apisto offsping. His data and results are quantified and shown in graphical form as well. Essentially, if you are successful at breeding a given species of Apisto and your pH is near an outer boundary of its acceptable range, you will produce almost exclusively all females or males! I recommend this book highly. The pictures are great and so is the information. A better book on South American Dwarf Cichlids cannot be found.
