3.0 out of 5 stars I wish I could say I loved this stuff.
My family has used this product for many years and it has worked well for them. I, on the other hand, cannot use Bag Balm. I think it is due to my Sulfa allergy. I may be wrong, but it is important that people be aware of anything they are using, especially when it is not the initial intended usage. I tried it on my feet and my skin began to get red, itchy, blister,...

I am very pleased with the result and will continue to use Bag Balm from now on.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the first-aid kit for skin!, October 12, 2007
By
Bag Balm was highly recommended by a lady who worked in a professional beauty supply store to help with patches of severely dry and irritated skin on my shins during the freezing New York winter. Now, it doesn't seem like much to get a recommendation on a skin cream in a store like that, but I should tell you that they didn't even stock this item. She sent me to the drug store down the street to get it!

Bag Balm will NOT win any prizes for it's smell (just a touch medicinal) but it is a miracle cream if you are really suffering from patches of skin so dry that you end up raking with your nails to stop the dry skin itch.

Nothing I write could indicate what a life saver this stuff is. But, I guarantee that if you try it yourself you will agree that it had amazingly soothing properties.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for dog calous!, January 9, 2007
By
My dog developed a calous on his "knee joint" and the hair was falling out. My vet recommended the product to help heal it. It was very red and dry. Within three days we saw a huge improvement. Within a week the hair was actually growing back in the area that was affected. The results were amazing.

My family has used this product for many years and it has worked well for them. I, on the other hand, cannot use Bag Balm. I think it is due to my Sulfa allergy. I may be wrong, but it is important that people be aware of anything they are using, especially when it is not the initial intended usage. I tried it on my feet and my skin began to get red, itchy, blister, and peel. I had a little redness on my hands, as well, but I had wiped it off and washed my hands after applying it to my feet. Anyway, I noticed someone giving a warning about 8-Hydroxyquinoline sulfate and I wanted to share my experience. I know Bag Balm worked well for my family, so just be aware that it isn't for everyone. I realize very few people have a Sulfa allergy, so this product will probably work great for the majority of the people like it did for my family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superior Product....., February 19, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Bag Balm Ointment, 10 oz. (Misc.)
I had seen the familiar Bag Balm container in drug stores for years before finally buying some. I decided to purchase it after seeing an article about it in the local paper here. It spoke of its history and its superior moisturizing and protective qualities, and, though it was originally designed for use on livestock, it has become extremely popular with people. Like a lot of other folks, I sometimes suffer from dry skin. Especially in the winter time when the air is cold and dry. And when I am out on a hike and my skin is exposed to dry wintry blasts of air continually. A visit to the drug store aisle to check out skin conditioners will serve to enlighten one that they are certainly not alone. There are tons of every kind of skin conditioner one can imagine. All conditioners, or balms, seem to work well at first. They moisten and condition the skin effectively enough. However, the real test comes over time in the hopes that it will well stay that way for a while. That is where this Bag Balm (BB) goes to the head of the class over all others.

If you have never seen or used BB before, you may at first be put of by its consistency, which will remind one of a thinner version of Vaseline. Although it is a little thick and gooey like Vaseline, it does not stay in that state for long once it is spread on the skin. It feels at first rather slimy, but quickly dries and forms a very effective coating on the skin. Though you can feel it on your skin for hours after application, it neither feels tacky nor sticks to your clothing. And it is nothing less than superior in its moisturizing properties. Even the driest skin will not see BB just disappear and be in need of another application in just a couple of hours like so many other lotions. Personally I apply it once a day when needed and just forget about it until the next. It is by far the best moisturizing ointment I have ever used anywhere. I have to stop a little short in recommending someone smear BB all over ones arms and legs like a lot of women do with other lotions. Especially if your going to be out and about. It can be used that way of course, but its thickness and consistency may prove to be a little much in that respect. That doesn't mean that some folks may not find its feel all that much to bear up under and use it as an overall lotion. However personally I feel better recommending it for dry patches, and other kinds of skin abrasions. For such use there is absolutely nothing better that I have ever experienced. I routinely spread some on my face when hiking and have never gotten wind burned or suffered dry skin no matter how long I am out there.

In conclusion, the "medicinal" scent that other reviewers here have mentioned is barely noticeable to me, and quickly disappears after application in any event. I would have to say that Bag Balm has less fragrance to it than any other lotion that has a scent at all. Also, I am far from being put off by this products original purpose being for use on cattle and other livestock. It has been used far too long by people to be referred to strictly as a veterinary product that has made the crossover. It's my recommendation that if you suffer from relentless dry skin that you don't let its original purpose matter to you either. It is certainly not the first product that was originally created with another use in mind, that eventually was found to have a further benefit in some other area. My experience with Bag Balm is that it works so well on dry skin that it eventually puts itself out of business. That is to say, the dry patches just eventually just stop appearing and you can slack off on its use for quite some time. So unless you live in Death Valley, this 10 oz can of balm should last you a year or more.

Its the very best at doing what it is supposed to do, and I highly recommend it...

5.0 out of 5 stars If there ever was a cure-all..., June 21, 2009
This review is from: Bag Balm Ointment, 10 oz. (Misc.)
I originally bought this cream (okay, goo) for my husband, who suffers from terrible cracked skin around his knuckles. My mum uses it on her gardener's hands, and swears by it. It worked great! But my husband didn't like how thick and greasy it was, and he didn't like the vaguely medicinal smell. So, I've been using it on occasion, for scrapes or chapped lips. Works wonderfully on those too.

In November, we had a baby girl, and this is when Bag Balm really became my new best friend. Her diaper rashes could get really nasty, and BB was the only thing I found that would a) protect her from any new irritation, while b) speeding up the healing process. For everyday use, I use creams, but as soon as there is any chapping or redness, out comes the BB! I live overseas, and the shipping was really expensive - but I don't regret a penny!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great to have around!, July 16, 2010
This review is from: Bag Balm Ointment, 10 oz. (Misc.)
This product works incredibly well for my family. I use it on everything from dry, cracked heels, to skinned knees, and it keeps skin soft and protected while helping to heal. I've even used it on my dogs' minor skin irritations and had great success.
It's a generously sized container, and I feel that I definitely got my money's worth. However, the product itslef-- while working very well-- does smell a bit odd, and is hard to wash out of clothing/bedding. Provided that one is careful with it,l this isn't a problem, adn I highly recommend this product!

I have been using this product for a long time and love it. It can be used for paper cuts, dry skin, sunburns and many other things. The price has gone up but it is a very good product and worth the money. I always keep a tin of this in the house.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works great for dry, cracked feet... not so good for eczema, July 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Bag Balm Ointment, 10 oz. (Misc.)
I bought this to use on my feet. I've used tons of lotions, scrapers (i.e. cheese grater like tools) and various pumice bars, but I'm still plagued with really dry, cracked, and callused feet. The Bag Balm worked GREAT for softening and smoothing them! I put the ointment on at night and then covered my feet in socks to prevent getting the ointment all over the sheets. By the next morning there was a HUGE improvement in my feet. It does stink and is messy to put on, so it gets 4 instead of 5 stars.

WARNING: I've been plagued with dyshidrotic eczema my entire life. While the Bag Balm was great for smoothing my feet it totally inflamed my eczema. I'm talking BAD! This is really unfortunate because I really want to continue using it. I know some people have said it improves eczema. Maybe for them, but not me. Maybe its the lanolin? Not sure. Just wanted let others know if they have the same skin problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing for Diaper Rash!, October 27, 2010
This review is from: Bag Balm Ointment, 10 oz. (Misc.)
I really can't believe how well this worked on diaper rash. My daughter had slept through a full diaper a few nights ago. She never wakes up to be changed, so often I will check her while she's asleep, but this particular night she had been sick and I really didn't want to wake her up... well, the next morning she had diaper rash from hell and it only got worse the more products I tried. I tried zinc oxide, Desitin, plain Vaseline, baby powder hoping to dry it out, NOTHING worked. Every time I changed her she'd cry and so would I. Finally I told my husband "We need to take her to the doctor, it looks raw and painful." He told me "Let's try one more thing and if it doesn't work, we'll take her in." I found a review for Bag Balm here on Amazon and ran out to try it. Some complained about the smell, I like it. I slathered it on her bottom, fastened her diaper and tucked her in for the night.

WOW!!! The next morning when we checked her, the diaper rash had reduced by I'd say 75%, and was not red at all. We were psyched that she seemed to be getting some relief! By the next night her rash was gone. I can't thank my lucky stars enough for this wonderful product. I've wasted so much money on baby creams, and this ended up being the only thing that worked. My daughter thanks you as well!
