Editorial Reviews

Every once in a while an artist comes along that breaks the mold, an artist who fails to fit into today's cookie cutter world, an artist unwavering in his fierce commitment to creativity and unyielding in his refusal to compromise. That artist is Bag. This self titled debut is the inaugural release on Kiss founder Gene Simmons' recently activated Simmons Records and features 14 total tracks. 2005.

3.0 out of 5 stars Something Fresh, October 17, 2005
This review is from: Bag (Audio CD)
It's refreshing to hear a new artist with a different sound. You can hear a lot of influence in this music. It's not going to be for everybody but if you have an open mind it's worth checking out.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worse than Gene Simmons cover of "When You Wish Upon a Star", March 7, 2006
This review is from: Bag (Audio CD)
Maybe I shouldn't talk trash, in case Gene wants to make me his next protege/whore, but I'de say that if that is the only wager on the table then we're gambling with a very small pot anyway. Why all this babbling about our blood spitting friend Mr Simmons, you ask? Well, sometimes I roam through the graveyard of Sanctuary Records just for laughs (come on--Lynard Skynard, De La Soul, Ministry, Kiss and "BAG"--what the hell is that?), and it was there that I discovered the awful reality that Gene Simmons is on the corner handing out careers to guys like BAG (should have called himself "SACK"). Talent is not really the issue when I'm too busy rolling in the floor laughing at Gene and how deeply he revels in his own crotch area (are these two lovers or something?). Seriously, listen to these clips and tell me if you would not be exceedingly discomforted to be in the room with either of these gentleman, much less in a enclosed studio with both of them. BAG terrifys me. Look at the cover--you think maybe for a moment it could be all good giggles like the Pharcyde, well, uh--NO--that ain't happening. Instead we are dealing with cannibal laughing disease because it's not funny and yet I am busting a gut until I feel I might die that way. Is this guy serious! Does he really sit down with all his musical knowledge and make THIS out of it. Where is his girlfriend to talk him out of this? It's like Justin Warfield being forced at gunpoint to remix Limp Biscuit lyrics. Seriously, have you heard that drummer from John Spencer Blues Explosion? His name is Russell Simmons (yeah, you are laughing already, right?) and he did a solo album where half of it was cool like Money Mark or Beck at his worst and the other half sounded like the identity crisis of the century. Sorry to waste your time with my arrogant Gene Simmons tone of voice here, but BAG is even worse than the tracks probably left off of Russell Simmons (sp?) album. I know G-Love sold his soul to Coca-Cola, but does he really need to be mocked? G-Love did have one half decent album for God's sake! Worst of all is that NO Bag certainly is NOT original in his mixture of icky masculine sudo-raps, and enough poppy bubble gum acoustic guitar to even give a fair carney a stomach ache. I take it back, that's not the worst of it--the worst thing is that I can't figure out if he's ripping off Justin Warfield (since no one really heard him anyway), or those two stupid tattooed and piecered dudes who sang that (s)hit song "butterfly" (leaning over the trash to puke as I say this). If not then he must be the Wierd Al version of 311, Incubus and Sublime all at once. Seriously, avoid this like the plague and research some of these other groups I mentioned instead. BAG MAKES ME SICK!!!
