I bought this as a gift for a person with very limited use of her right arm that she experienced as a result of a stroke... she loves bagels but couldn't cut them without endangering herself with the sharp knife...and found the ones that were already split weren't great so had given up on having them on her own...until now...she states she is ecstatic about this gift...she can finally "finagle the bagel"!!!!the only thing that could be an improvement is if it could be locked on a surface like a suction cup or something similar...so then it would be perfect. Yet, she is not complaining!

Initially I was very happy with this cute and functional bagel slicer, but soon trouble hit when I went to slice a particularly tough bagel. It never worked right again after that. Upon further inspection I could see through the little holes on the item that the problem was that one of the blades inside had become slightly bent. I thought- no problem I'll just straighten it out- but I couldn't because the way this is designed you can't ever get to the blade even if you want to. I threw it out and my brother being the little engineer that he is fished it out and took it apart to see what was wrong. To take it apart he had to literally break it. What we found was that the blades are really very thin so they can bend and skiew very easily. It went back in the trash. Design issues include: Blades too thin and bend easily; No way to get to the blades to sharpen or clean them if needed.

The Bagelpod Red Black looks attractive and interesting on the counter. It has performed almost perfectly, but on a few bagels it tended to scrunch the bagel and not do a clean cut. I think this was due to the soft dough consistency of certain bagels where they weren't crisp enough or were a little sticky. All in all, I count on the machine to give me perfect cuts every time with no worry as to safety.

Clever mechanism and I liked it at first but after a few months it would not cut fully thru. I'm back to a POK (plain old knife).

I saw this advertised in a catalog, found it on amazon and ordered it for my husband for Christmas. I love being able to slice the bagel in half, unlike the bakery slicer that gets 1/3-2/3's.
