Baggage Check

“An entertaining novel about three men on a journey to find the right woman,” says Ebony Magazine.

“Provocative, passionate, invigorating and liberating,” are how others describe Baggage Check—the “must read” novel with the power to transform written by the “must read” author, Curtis Bunn.

Take three thirty-something, financially secure, handsome guys who have been lifelong friends and are used to having relationships on their terms—in other words “it’s their way or the highway” a.k.a. “take it or leave it.”

As close friends, Julian Morgan, Greg Gibson, and Larry Thompson demonstrate honesty, trust, and unconditional support for each other. But strangely enough, they don’t bring these same qualities to the table when dealing with women. The question becomes “why?” And the answer is because they need a “Baggage Check.”

Julian Morgan wants relationships that are “convenient.” Greg Gibson loves his business and money first and foremost. And Larry Thompson is Mr. Hit and Run. After a series of relationship mishaps, they do a Baggage Check on themselves—unfortunately later rather than sooner. They realize that they cannot be with Ms. Right if they continue to be Mr. Wrong and so the pursuit begins.

In the end, the fellas wind up on “maturation highway” and “redemption road” but that’s only after a long and very bumpy journey. Bunn is your personal escort who takes you through their tragedy and triumph. His “flip the script” literary style reveals the serious side of “funny” and the funny side of “serious.”

In his debut novel, Curtis Bunn, who is an award-winning sports journalist for the Atlanta Journal Constitution, has penned the first relationship novel that deals specifically with a factor that impacts on many relationships—Baggage.

Review

"An entertaining novel about three men on a journey to find the right woman." -- Ebony Magazine

"Baggage Check is a blend of humor and suspense that offfers a dose of optimism and satisfaction." -- Rolling Out Magazine --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

From the Inside Flap

Meet three guys in need of a baggage check (see backcover for definition): Julian Jackson (professor) on the double standard men enjoy in relationships—“They say what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. Well, not for this gander.” Greg Gibson (bookstore owner) on financial settlements resulting from divorce—“Half? She ain’t sell one book and she’s going to get Half? Larry Thompson (actor) on being involved with just one woman—“Monogamy? What’s that—a disease?

While all relationship books deal with the hang-ups people bring into relationships, award winning sports journalist Curtis Bunn’s debut novel is devoted entirely to this topic. Baggage Check is about three life-long “thirty-something” men who demonstrate true commitment to each other but come up short when dealing with the women in their lives because—they (the men) have baggage.

We meet Julian Jackson getting his “cheat” on with . . . (see opening chapter). He’s supposed to be committed.

Greg Gibson is engaged. His marriage is set for “whenever” or “no time soon” which ever comes last.

And Larry Thompson is a real-life “He’s gotta have it,” kinda guy. Enough said.

Curtis Bunn’s Baggage Check is a concoction of wit and humor, surprise and suspense, and hope and happiness. Larry Thompson goes from “Larry Loves Larry” to “Larry Loves the Lord.” Greg Gibson goes from “Money” to “Matrimony.” And Julian Jackson goes from “I” and “Me” to “Us” and “We.”

Published by Upstream and backed by AUDACITY The Literary Consortium, Baggage Check is the relationship genre’s first must-read novel written by the first must-read author—Curtis Bunn.

More About the Author

Curtis Bunn grew up in Washington, D.C. as a young athlete with ambitions of becoming a sportswriter. And he did just that, studying journalism at Ballou High School and Norfolk State University, where he graduated with a B.A. degree in Journalism in 1983. He began an award-winning 25-year career as a sportswriter, serving stints at The Washington Times, New York Newsday, New York Daily News and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

In 2001, Bunn took a career turn when he penned his first novel, "Baggage Check," a revealing book about the lives of three male friends unable to find true love because they carried "baggage" or issues from one relationship to the next. The book became a national word-of-mouth success and vaulted to No. 1 on the Essence magazine best-sellers list.

He has authored three more books, including "A Cold Piece Of Work" (Strebor Books/Simon & Schuster, July 2011). Inspired by meeting with reading groups about his novels, Bunn created the National Book Club Conference, which blossomed into a premier annual literary event.

Additionally, for three years he has been an adjunct journalism professor at Morehouse College.

He is driven and inspired by his son, Curtis Jr., daughter Gwen and nephew Gordon, who is like a son. When he is not writing, cooking or watching sports, he can be found on the golf course.

Baggage Check By Curtis Bunn

Reviewed by Zane (Author of Addicted and The Sex Chronicles: Shattering the Myth) RAW SISTAZ Book Club

Many have tried, but few have succeeded. Curtis Bunn has penned an excellent novel on relationships from a male's perspective. Julian, Greg, and Larry have a lot of baggage (hang-ups about women passed on from past relationships with lovers, mothers, and friends). Enter a slew of women boggled down with their own baggage and it gets extremely interesting. At first, I was skeptical about reading the novel because I assumed it would be yet another relationship drama full of male-female bashing and stereotypes. Not so. The stories entwined into Baggage Check are so realistic, they will bring back memories for anyone that has ever loved before. The three men in the book show that males can be sensitive to the needs of females and discover the true priorities in life. Greg, after losing the only woman that ever mattered to him over money, realizes that the love of a woman is the most valuable asset. Larry, the playa of all playas, meets his match in the form of the lovely nurse Renee, who leads him to not only love but also to the Lord. Julian, after having his heart crushed by a straying lover, finally finds his ideal mate, giving up his self-imposed list of prerequisites (no children, no long distance, etc.) Curtis Bunn is an author with a remarkable voice and I suspect he will be around for years to come. His talent for details and descriptions is outstanding, but even they can't hold a candle to his talent for writing emotional-driven dialogue. In a world of AA literature heavy-laden with mediocre relationship novels pushed onto the public by publishing houses more concerned with quantity than quality, Baggage Check is a step ahead of all the rest. I give this novel a 5 on the RAW Scale.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read novel, January 9, 2001
By A Customer

Absolutely great! I loved "Baggage Check." Just an excellent job by the writer of telling the story and developing each character. I cannot say enough of how I enjoyed the religious tone without throwing in the religious tone. It was absolutely wonderful. I also saw a lot of what I was looking for as far as how men think about certain situations like hand-holding. I know it was not necessarily the way every man thinks about it, but it gave me a different way to look at that subject with a man's perspective. To be frank, the book taught me a lot. I have always gone into relationships thinking that my partner was on the same page when in fact he was not. Looking at how you explain the way people look at situations, depending on where they are in their own developmental stages, helped me. When Larry became comfortable with the handholding and other "touchy-feely" things, it made me realize you have to wait for a person to be ready. I thought I knew all of this stuff but actually I wasn't applying it to my own relationship. I tried to prolong the book when I saw I was nearing the end. It was that good that I had to fight with myself to not finish the book so I would have some more to read the next day. My friend said that she did the same thing too. We cannot wait for the next release from Curtis Bunn. We are sure it will be just as good. Sonequa Braddy

4.0 out of 5 stars Check Yours to Check This, January 5, 2002
This review is from: Baggage Check (Hardcover)
Julian, Greg and Larry have been best friends since their childhood in Washington D.C. All three have different career paths and place value on different things, however they all have two things in common, their love for each other, and their inability to maintain a monogamous relationship.

Julian, the professor, says he loves his girlfriend Joanne but ends up in the sack with her sister and soon after said tryst finds out that Joanne is pregnant. He plans on taking care of his child, but his commitment to Joanne is lukewarm. Greg, the penny pinching bookstore owner, made the "mistake" of telling his long time love that he plans to marry her. Now her constant haranguing about when the marriage will take place is getting to him. Finally there's Larry, the aspiring actor and "playa". He spreads himself around and sticks with no one long enough for the words commitment or relationship to pop up. No woman has been able to hold his attention in that way. In today's climate these three are really quite ordinary in terms of their behavior and value systems. What makes Julian, Greg and Larry special is that they all learn by means of one fairly extraordinary event that they all have "baggage", which needs to be checked. (read the book for explanation). Once their baggage has been checked they all learn to love more freely.

As a female reader I was skeptical about how a story about men, written by a man would speak to me and speak about women. However, Baggage Check was a pleasant surprise. All the elements of a good story are there, believable characters, a startling beginning, a middle that held the reader's interest and a happy ending. Parts of this story in fact were uproariously funny as well as touching. How women are portrayed really became background for the real story of personal growth that happened for each of the characters. Yes the women were there and aided in the growth but the men had to do the hard work on their own. Bunn enabled this reader to drop her skepticism by simply writing a good story.
