Book Description

March 20, 2007
This first-person story paints a picture of the daily life of a Sunni Muslim, a shopkeeper, living in Baghdad.

The internal worlds of Muslims, the worlds of honor & shame and anger & fear, are the keys to understanding why Iraq is such a violent place.
But, this story gives hope that reconciliation and peace with God and with family can and does happen.
This hope you can experience through this book -- that most Iraqis seek a better life where there is peace and trust.

Find truth and inspiration through this story written from the personal viewpoint of an Iraqi who is brave enough to tell his story.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Having been to the Middle East many times, I have a deep love for these people who are so in need of Jesus. Baghdad Believer provides an incredible opportunity for the reader to go inside the heart and mind of a Muslim seeker who becomes a follower of Christ. This book hits right at the heart of the most important spiritual, political, and cultural issues of our day. We no longer have the luxury of ignoring the spiritual battle that exists today between two very different ways of viewing God and life. This book will not only help you to understand these issues but also will give you a love for Muslims for whom Jesus died. John Avant, Vice President Evangelism Group North American Mission Board, SBC --John Avant

In the context of global evangelization, the Muslim world continues to be a formidable barrier. That does not reflect a deficiency in the gospel but in those who share the gospel lacking a sensitivity and insight into how the good news of God s love through Jesus Christ is filtered through the Muslim worldview. Outsiders seldom comprehend the complexity of family, community, politics and traditional values that inhibit a truth-seeking Muslim from understanding and receiving the gospel. This personal pilgrimage, as graphically communicated by J. Nealson in Baghdad Believer, comes out of extensive experience and relationships in the Muslim world and will equip others to be more effectives witnesses and disciplers in that context. Jerry Rankin, President International Mission Board, SBC --Jerry Rankin

This book is informative, interesting, and easy to read. It includes a clear process by which a Muslin believer can evangelize and disciple a Muslim friend or family member. It gives a good inside look at the interrelationships of a Muslim family and the role each member is expected to play. There is a great need for this book to be translated into other languages to be used as a model for training nationals to evangelize their Muslim friends. Delaney F. 5.0 out of 5 stars An examination of truth and culture, December 9, 2007
This review is from: Baghdad Believer: a Sunni Muslim Experiences Jesus in the Midst of Destruction and Violence (Perfect Paperback)
From the first page to the last sentence I was taken with the rich detail of Jay Nealson's account of an Iraqi Muslim's attempts to see the difference between, "...truth and culture..." This is more than the story of one man's journey toward Christ. It is a realistic look at the spiritual risks and opportunities that exist for Muslim's in a war torn nation. Time and again, Jay Nealson's prose is almost poetry. When his character says, "In following Isa, life is not easier, but it seems so." you feel the intensity as well as the exaltation of his belief. This is a book that gives hope, even in the face of entrenched and dangerous opposition. LOUISE BUTLER, Author of Beating the Bell Curve, and Gloriana! and regular contributor to The Mensa Bulletin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good news from Iraq, September 20, 2007
By
This review is from: Baghdad Believer: a Sunni Muslim Experiences Jesus in the Midst of Destruction and Violence (Perfect Paperback)
This book provides a refreshing--but realistic--alternative to the bad news we hear coming from Iraq almost every day. The reader is left with the conviction that the real hope for Iraq comes neither from military nor political solutions, but from God's spirit gradually changing lives and transforming society through people like Mahmood and his uncle.

Mahmood's journey is not the story of a victim and the author does not seek to villainize those who persecute the believers. Rather, this story shows how Muslim followers of Christ must struggle with unique issues, such as how to reconcile maintaining family honor with zeal for proclaiming Christ, and how to put the teachings of the Sermon on the Mount into practice in an entirely Islamic environment.

As is often the case across the Muslim world, Christ reveals himself to Mahmood through a series of dreams. In addition to receiving comfort and peace from these revelations, Mahmood matures in his faith through listening to stories of the Prophets, reading the Bible and discussing issues of faith with his uncle. Of particular interest is how the audio stories in the local dialect complemented the teachings of the printed Scriptures in the literary language and provided Mahmood with a more accessible vehicle for sharing his faith with family members.
