Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8 Not a frenzied beat is skipped between the ending of the fifth saga and the start of the sixth as this newest takes up the very next day, the third, of the Bagthorpes' holiday abroad in a "haunted" Welsh house. Mr. Bagthorpe, in need of ghostly material for his television scripts, has rented the dwelling, complete with several apparitions but incomplete for conveniences, sight unseen. With cousin Daisy and her pet goat running rampant and Uncle Parker driving his car amuck, the Bagthorpes and their housekeeper, Mrs. Fosdyke are rattled by both the primitive conditions of the house and the attempts at spirit-raising. Grandpa being misplaced and Grandma's obstinate playing of warped opera records build to a crescendo of seances invaded by sheep, police and prearranged ghosts. The countryside will never be the same; by the end, Bagthorpes has become a Welsh byword for bringing bad luck. The pace never falters with new twists and chuckles around every bend. There's no sagging in the series continuity or flagging of the individuality of each family "character." The preposterousness is maintained with freshness as the Bagthorpe tradition of mayhem and mirth is continued. Their ill-fated venture abroad is hauntingly funny. Julie Cummins, Monroe County Lib .
