Book Description

December 15, 1992
400 feet deep, in the treacherous waters of green turtle cay, lies the world's most dangerous cargo...waiting for the world's most daring diver.

Salvage diver Tiller Galloway vowed he would never work for "The Baptist" again. Until the menacing kingpin makes him an offer he can't refuse, sending him deep into the beautiful blue Caribbean to raise fifty tons of cargo-- a dive to the razor's edge of death. Caught in the cross fire of a crazed underboss and hostile islanders, Tiller takes on a nightmare of double crosses, as a scenario more sinister than he ever imagined begins to unfold.

From the author of Down to a Sunless Sea comes this shattering sequel to Hatteras Blue, a tale as explosive as those of Clive Cussler and Peter Benchley, and packed with some of the most breathless undersea scenes ever written.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In the latest adventure of likable Lyle "Tiller" Galloway, Poyer ( Hatteras Blue ) combines an obvious love of the sea with an equally obvious distaste for the drug-runners who use it, and produces an action-packed, fast-paced novel. On parole after serving five years for cocaine smuggling, Galloway is trying to put his life back together. He and Shad Aydlett are co-owners of Blitz Brothers, a debt-ridden recreational diving/salvage outfit operating out of Hatteras, N.C. Galloway refuses when ex-boss Juan "the Baptist" Nunez suggests that he return to his former line of work, but quickly recants after his boat and business are destroyed. He and Aydlett agree to a 400-foot dive to recover 50 tons of cocaine believed lying off the coast of the Bahamas. But they soon come to realize that nothing is as it seems and no one is to be trusted--perhaps not even each other. Poyer builds suspense expertly, with plenty of twists and turns.

From Library Journal

Poyer, author of various sea stories, here continues the adventures of Tiller Galloway, diver and reformed smuggler, who was introduced in Hatteras Blue ( LJ 5/1/89 ) . Tiller and his partner Shad find themselves compelled to help a ruthless cocaine ring recover a sunken shipment. When South American revolutionaries and Cuban Communists become involved too, things really get complicated. This is a good old-fashioned adventure novel that holds reader interest with unfolding mystery and mounting tension rather than sex and graphic violence. As in Hatteras Blue, the technical details of diving and undersea salvage are accurately and vividly presented, making the underwater episodes the best parts of the book. Poyer's villains tend to be a bit more memorable than his heroes but Tiller and Shad grow on the reader. An enjoyable addition to what appears to be a good new adventure series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like the Sea and boats? You'll like this book!, February 3, 1997

Don't let the fact that this book is not brand new or not expensive put you off! The characters are great and the price is a bargain! This is a book for techno-types who like the sea and boats. The main character is NOT a superhero and not a real loser either. Gee.. a real person. Good techno fiction.. action, diving, technology.. good stuff. -- Frank Derfle

4.0 out of 5 stars A Solid Maritime Thriller, June 6, 2004

This review is from: Bahamas Blue (Mass Market Paperback)
Salvage diver Lyle "Tiller" Galloway just wants to forget the days when he smuggled drugs for a ruthless criminal known as "The Baptist." His former boss wants him back, however, this time for a dangerous salvage operation that will make Galloway rich if he lives through it.

It's a well-used plot, but Poyer makes it work by paying attention to the details. The underwater scenes are excellent (as always), the descriptions of the Bahamas are vivid, and the wealth of technical details about diving and salvage work never slow the plot down. Best of all, unlike _Hatteras Blue_, the big plot twist that Poyer springs near the end of the story makes sense and ties together a lot of seemingly loose ends. Galloway is still a likable character, still wishing he could shake off the past and still unable to do it.

As maritime thrillers go, _Bahamas Blue_ isn't quite up to the standards set by Sam Llewellyn, Hammond Innes, and Brian Callison, but its a solid piece of work and an excellent choice for fans of the genre.

Just got finished with this book(5/99). It's was great. It's was spell binding until the last page! Descriptions of the islands, under water, boats, people, and the action made you feel you were right there. Excellent book! Personally, I'm going to buy his other "Blue" books...
