Book Description

April 2005 Ben Candidi Mysteries
As vacationing Ben Candidi and Rebecca Levis sail through International Waters toward Grand Bahama Island, they receive a strange welcome—a sinking cabin cruiser with a dead man at the helm. Ben knows how to patch bullet holes below the waterline and Rebecca knows how to estimate time of death. And they agree that the West End marina is the right place to bring the body. To avoid trouble, they play it dumb and treat the cocaine-smuggling marina tenants as the divers and sport fishermen they are pretending to be. Unfortunately, the mailbox corporation in Miami that owns the yacht ignores Ben's $100,000 salvage claim—and the Bahamian police won't let him move the yacht to Florida. The harder Ben and Rebecca press their claim, the more sinister West End becomes. Should they cut their losses and run? Or is it too late already?

From Booklist

Ben Candidi (Ph.D.) and his life partner Rebecca Levis (M.D.) find themselves in the middle of a bizarre murder mystery. A voyage in international waters turns ugly when the couple comes across a sinking boat, its only passenger ("Steve," they later learn) swimming in a pool of his own blood mixed with seawater. Together Ben and Rebecca repair the boat and bring it and the body to the West End of Grand Bahama Island. They are stuck there because the authorities won't release the broken boat to Ben--not the owner of record--and the actual owner back in Miami refuses to pay Ben's salvage claim. Ben and Rebecca are left to deal with the sordid characters on the marina--drug smugglers, tarot-card readers, and corrupt officials--as best they can while trying to solve the murder of "Steve." Wyle (the pen name of a retired biomedical scientist) blends scientific smarts with quirky characters in another fine outing in a too-little known series. Mary Frances Wilkens

About the Author

Dirk Wyle is the pen name of Duncan H. Haynes, Ph.D., a 30-year veteran of biomedical science with a lifelong interest in literature. Commercial success of his drug microencapsulation technology enabled an early retirement from the duties of medical school professor. Since 2001 he has devoted full effort to inventing new challenges and adventures for his youthful protagonists, Ben Candidi (Ph.D.) and Rebecca Levis (M.D.).

Believing there are no stone walls separating the realms of popular science, serious literature and formal mystery, Dirk Wyle has created stories that play out in all three arenas. Ben accepts "straightforward" projects which quickly turn perplexing, mysterious and then sinister. Shortly after Ben solves the mystery, the bad guys (and gals) strike back and he must fight for his life. In the last two books of the Series, Rebecca has fought along with him.

More About the Author

Dirk Wyle's mystery-thrillers play out against an authentically rendered backdrop of biomedical science. His stories are informed by a long scientific career that included a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, postdoctoral work in Germany and service as a medical school professor in Miami ("Google" Duncan H. Haynes). He conducted research in abnormal blood coagulation and drug delivery and invented a drug microencapsulation technology (searchable at www.uspto.gov) which led to the founding of three companies employing approximately 65 people. Countless story ideas came as a byproduct of that quest, and eventual commercial success gave him leeway to create the Ben Candidi mystery-thriller series. Believing there are no stone walls separating the realms of popular science, serious literature, formal mystery and cliff-handing suspense, Dirk Wyle has created stories that play out in all four arenas. Protagonist Ben accepts "straightforward scientific" projects which quickly turn perplexing, mysterious and then sinister. With the help of fiancee Rebecca Levis, world health physician, Ben solves the mystery just before the bad guys (and gals) strike back. Like his protagonists Ben and Rebecca, Dirk Wyle does not regard work and play as necessarily separate activities. He enjoys researching the books' exotic locations, which include the waters of South Florida, the Bahamas and the Brazilian Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars A definite recommendation, December 29, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Bahamas West End Is Murder: A Ben Candidi Mystery (Ben Candidi Mysteries) (Paperback)
Booklist calls the Ben Candidi mysteries "a too-little known series" and I have to agree. "Bahamas West End is Murder" is the fifth in what author Dirk Wyle (pen name for Duncan H. Haynes, PhD, retired biomedical scientist) hopes will ultimately be a 21 book series.

In this one, PhD Ben Candidi and his significant other, Rebeeca Levis, MD are both between jobs and plan to use their freedom to sail to the Bahamas and just spend time together. But it doesn't take long for a dead man on a sinking cabin cruiser to interfere with their best laid plans.

Yes, "Bahamas West End is Murder" is a who-done-it, but unlike so many in the same genre, this one not only leaves the reader guessing until the very last page, but spices the intricate and fast-paced plot with interesting characters, fascinating historical tidbits about the Bahamas, and authentic scientific and nautical details. A definite recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sailing to murder, June 30, 2011
Ben Candidi has a doctorate in pharmacology, a freelance career as a scientist, an alluring physician as a soul mate, and a nose for murder.

Ben and Rebecca encounter a sinking cabin cruiser when sailing to the Bahamas for vacation and a bit of work. They decide to tow the craft to the West End marina, along with the onboard body. Ben intends to claim the craft for salvage.

They settle into a slot in the marina to relax and enjoy their time while waiting for permission to take their prize to Miami. But the Florida corporation who owns the yacht ignores their claim, and the Bahama police won't let them leave with it. Then it becomes obvious that the friendly people in the neighboring slips and their island associates aren't all just enjoying the beautiful weather and fine snorkeling. Ben needs to save more than his salvage claim. Now he has to save their lives.

Dirk Wyle has an understanding of science--he is a scientist first--and a deep appreciation for sailing. He brings both elements to the reader in this fast-paced novel.
