Review of the Bahco Bow Saw #9 All Purpose - 3/4" x 36" blade Bahco item # 9-36-23-KP by J. Sawberry

(Note: At the time of my purchase Amazon did not carry this product but did offer it through another online dealer.)

Ok, here is my short attention span review: You buyie, You likie.

For enquiring minds..... Read on.

Being an old country boy I have been using hand tools since I was a child. My father always kept an old bow saw around the house if one of my sisters or mother needed to cut a piece of fire wood. We boys were trained to use the "Manly" axe to downsize a log. As Quigley would say "Never had any need for one, didn't say I did not know how to use one!"

Talk about needing a bow saw, should you find yourself in need of a lightweight, sawdust spewing, sweat powered, wood cutting machine well, then you should look no farther than the Big Bahco 36 inch bow saw. At just under two pounds I agree with what Andrew Reeves said, "It's a Beast!" (Insert howling sound here!)

So just how big of a piece wood can a Bahco cut if a Bahco can cut wood? Tell us Uncle Sawberry please! Ok since you asked, let's get a few dimensions. That should take some of the guess work out of things.

The saw has an overall size of 39 inches in length by 10 inches tall by ¾ inches at its widest point at the rear blade holder. (This is not a backpacking saw. It is a vehicle saw or around the home/ farm use.)

The bow saw is from blade to frame as follows:
5 inches at front of saw at downward bend of frame to saw blade.
7 ½ inches at mid point of frame to saw blade.
8 ¾ inches at rear of saw at downward bend of frame to saw blade.

We had a big storm blow in with 100+ mph winds and had a LOT of downed trees. I grabbed this saw and went to town. THe All purpose blade has huge teeth and chewed through branches in the 1" to 6" diameter range almost as fast as a chainsaw. When you get much bigger you have to put a lot of thought into ensuring you don't get the blade to bind. Below the 1" size the teeth are MUCH to large and it's really tough to get a consistent cut. I actually felled a 12" tree at the base. It worked VERY well.

I actually ran over this with my suburban on accident. But a slight bow to the right still works awesome...

Only slight complaint I have is it would be nice to have a bit more control over the blade tension.

All in all An AWESOME saw, and WELL worth the money.

I bought this bow saw to keep in my boat so that when I am out in the swamps and see a log I want a piece of for wood turning, I can whack off a piece and take it home. I used this on an oak log about 8" across and it was cutting as fast as a chain saw. This saw is incredible! Lightweight and so easy to carry around. Excellent value!

This is worth the price - although I don't like the snap-in plastic handle, which can easily falls off. Time for some glue?

Unless you are cutting a lot of wood this saw will have it done before you get the chainsaw, fueled, oiled, and started.

It is more agressive than a fiskers 30 inch saw. Man can this thing chew through wood. The only thing I can compare it to is a chain saw. It went through 3 inch diamiter wood in 5 strokes. Wow. The only con is that it is so big. I'd love to take this thing backpacking but it is bigger than my backpack. I find backpacking saws to be anemic. But the fiskers 30 inch saw is lightweight. and the 21 inch fiskers if a feather but too small. I think I will get a bacho blade for my fiskers bow saw.

The blade on the bacho comes out of the box looking very mean. If your looking for an alternitive to a chainsaw the bacho 36 inch is it.

"When I found out that UPS messed up and sent this item to the wrong address, I contacted Industrial Supply...within the hour I was emailed that another one would be shipped. 5 Stars on Customer Service !!!" This saw just chews wood up, like butter, thanks to the long stroke...

As other reviewers have pointed out, this is an incredibly efficient saw. I needed something to clean up brush and small trees up to six inches with a few rare cuts a little over six inches. I seriously considered the Black and Decker power lopper but the work was too far from a power source for the corded model and I wasn't satisfied with the reviews on the battery operated model. In the end I bought a Fiskers power lopper and the Bacho Bow Saw. The Fiscars will cut through branches or brush up to an inch and a half like butter. It will cut up to two inches but I find that from and inch and a half up the ideal is the Bahcho saw. I have been amazed at how quickly and easily it cuts. It think up to six or eight inches it takes less effort using the two pound Bacho than it does to handle a ten plus pound chain saw and you don't have to mess with gas and chain oil and all that.

Some reviewers have mentioned that the protective handle tends to fall off and I found this to be true, but fixed it very easily by using a little electrical tape at the top and bottom. The black tape looks like it belongs there.

It has also been mentioned that this saw is too big for backpacking, this is true. But if you were doing trail maintenance and had to deal with a tree too big for your Bacho folding saw this would be an ideal saw to carry in, even some distance and in many cases it could eliminate the need for an ax. It could also be handy when traveling by vehicle in the back woods where it might be necessary to clear the way. It takes no space at all and doesn't leave chain oil on the floor or bed of your vehicle.

This is a very useful, very versatile five star saw.
