The beauty and logic of this tool strikes you as soon as one is put in your hand. There is a substantial mass of steel at the end of a light medium-length axe handle which, coupled with the thinness of the blade - 1/32" or less - gives this way more cutting power with less driving effort than any machete or thicker axe blade. I have a mega-size gas weed wacker with a variety of large high-spinning blades that can sever plant, animal and mineral based objects instantly up to an inch or two in diameter. It makes flat cuts more close and level to the ground than the swede axe, and if working in 120 db noise, petro-fumes and getting totally exhausted and hated by your neighbors is appealing, then forget the axe, it will awaken caveman instincts in you and make you even more dangerous. The axe did not come with instructions. If it was American made - meaning made in China for an American company - it would have come with a 20 page manual, all of which would be safety instructions and legal disclaimers. You really have to love those Swedes and here is your chance to support them. The surveyor who showed me this tool (just like the other reviewer), said you put the replacement blade in and step on the back of the blade with your shoe and full weight to drive it into the notches in the spring yoke that hold it in high tension. Maybe the replacement blade comes with instructions but I didn't buy one and the original one looks like it will last forever if not allowed to rust. It is light enough to haul on your belt. Or just carry it - a mean bear or mountain lion could be dispatched with it. My only caution is that it is easy to leave 1-foot tall, 1" saplings with a sharp diagonal up-cut, on which you would not want to fall.

Not something you will use every day....no. But if you need it.... nothing else in the world is better at what it does....

This little clearing axe is about as long as a grown mans arm, easily used 1 handed, and is designed to " lop " limbs and branches off a larger limb or trunk so the larger more " logish " wood can be cut down into firewood or what have you.

I found this axe would shear 1.5 to 2 inch limbs with a single swing, and anything up to about 3 inch would come clear in 3 swings, 2 to cut a deep V and a 3rd to sheer thru.

If a machete were made for tall grasses and soft vines.... this thing would be its equal on woody vines and thumb size saplings that create dense undergrowth.... just anything up to about wrist size I find this the fastest safest most simple way to cut or clear..... and combined with a Bahco Bow saw..... its just almost all you'll ever need to process deadfall up to just short of full tree size.....

can't recommend it enough.....

All steel head, quality hardwood handle, will last you several lifetimes.... made in Sweden .....not China.... and MADE to last a lifetime...not made to break and have to be replaced.....

if your on the fence.... get it and try it.... I'm wondering how I got so old without one.

Used one years ago while working for a land surveyor. Have owned one for the past ten years or so and used it on camping and canoe trips. It is way cooler than you might think and deserves your respect. A razor blade on the end of an axe handle is a true marvel of modern ingenuity.

As others have commented, this is a great design of tool. A high-speed cut will go through fairly thick branches without you even feeling the impact. Can't be beat for clearing limbs off felled trees. Be careful taking golf-swings with it if your aim is less than perfect!

Swapping the blades is most easily done by clamping the outer upright of the "D" in a vice (or jamming it into a slot in something solid, like a chainsaw cut in a stump) and then using the leverage of the handle to bend the "D" closed enough that the old blade can be removed and the new one inserted using finger and thumb with no struggling or forcing required. Safer than stamping away in the vicinity of a sharp edge and less effort.

You won't be cutting down any large tree's with this, but it instantly dispatches small tress and brush. One whack is enough to cleanly slice through trees up to several inches thick at a 45 degree angle. Faster than a lopper or hatchet and uses less energy too. The only downside is the field of sharpened sticks you leave in your wake.

I got this to help clear trails of eye height limbs and such on the trails through the woods on his property. In short it is an amazing product. We can get in a John deere gator ride down the trail and cut the branches that look like the will hit people in the eyes. I totally agree with the other reviewers that this spring strung razor blade at the end of a short axe handle is prefectly end weighted for strong precise strikes to cut branches. I have not really used it to cut down brush. I use a stihl brush cutter for that but for branches it is a perfect tool.

Having had it for a year the handle has become a litte rough. The actual texture of the handle has become weathered. It needs a lite sanding steel wool to restore. I have not needed to sharpen it nor do I beleive I will in the near term
