Does this song sound familiar?

If you were ever in the New York area years ago and the name Jean Shepherd means anything to you, the Bahn Frei Polka, performed by Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Orchestra, this was the theme that you heard on Shep's radio broadcasts that were heard from his show on NYC's WOR AM radio. He had an overnight slot beginning in 1956, where he delighted his radio fans by telling stories, reading poetry (especially the works of Robert W. Service), and organizing comedic listener stunts.

He was about to be released by WOR for not being commercial, and he did a commercial for Sweetheart Soap, not a sponsor. He was immediately fired... but his loyal listeners besieged WOR with complaints. When Sweetheart offered to sponsor him, he was reinstated, and eventually attracted more sponsors than he wanted: the commercials interrupted the flow of his monologues. No matter what others may say or artists may record, to me this recording will always be the definitive version of the Bahn Frei Polka. Whenever I hear it I am immediately transported back to the 1960's, lying in the dark, under the covers with my transistor radio, listening to Shep spin his magic. We'll see how many comments this ringtone gets.

Each evening, as a kid, I would glue my ear to the radio WOR-AM to hear the Bahn Frei Polka signalling the start of The Jean Shepherd show. I miss him greatly but thank God that someone recorded a great number of them and made them available for purchase. EXCELSIOR, you fathead!

Instantly transported to the 1960s .... transistor radio plastered to my ear listening to Shep late into the night. The only other piece of music that does this for me is "Stars and Strips Forever". Excelsior!
